Es ist doch wohl möglich, daß ich zuweilen auch einen guten Gedanken habe; also will ich es immer meiner Faulheit abgewinnen und manchmal einiges niederschreiben. Wenn vielleicht das nämliche wiederholt und variiert vorkommen sollte, so ist das wohl ein Beweis, daß es oft und vielgestaltig in meiner Seele war. Daher könnte man vielleicht schließen, daß mir der Gegenstand etwas wichtig oder lieb müsse gewesen sein.Apokryphen nenne ich Dinge, aus denen man so eigentlich nicht recht weiß, was man zu machen hat. Es ist also alles in uns und um uns sehr apokryphisch, und man dürfte vielleicht sagen, die ganze Welt ist eine große Apokryphe. Mir ist es sehr lieb, wenn sie andern verständlicher ist als mir.Die Vernunft ist immer republikanisch, aber die Menschen scheinen, wenn man die Synopse ihrer Geschichte nimmt, doch durchaus zum Despotismus geboren zu sein.Solange man die Geduld zur ersten Tugend macht, werden wir nie viel tätige Tugend haben. An tätigen Tugenden scheint auch den Volksführern wenig zu liegen, sie brauchen nur leidende. Daher geht es denen leider kaum leidlich.Wer aus sich herauslebt, tut immer besser, als wer in sich hineinlebt.Wer ohne Tadel ist, ist immer ohne Furcht, aber wer ohne Furcht ist, ist nicht immer ohne Tadel. Es wäre also genug gewesen, zu sagen: »der Ritter ohne Tadel«, denn mit Furcht wäre er es nicht. Der Ausdruck wollte aber gleich den ersten Vorwurf gegen einen Ritter ausdrücklich heben, den Vorwurf der Furcht, und faßte sodann alles übrige in ein Wort zusammen.
