The gods decided to put an end to all the violence. Your scientists got the big bang theory practically right. It wasn't the creation of the universe. It was the destruction of the universe. Earth and what you see in the night sky is the aftermath, the rubble, you might say, of a universe that had been home to thousands upon thousands of inhabited planets.
