Influenced by viewing the work of Stephen Shore and Birdhead, and watching a video of an interview with Lee Friedlander, I decided the it was time to change my working practice. Rather than work to a pre contrived concept I decided that I would allow myself to simply react to the subject of trees. Using digital cameras with no tripod, editing each by using the same Photoshop action then getting all printed at a commercial Lab I compiled a series of over 200 images. These were exhibited and then edited into this book. The question is, has my working without a concept become a concept in its self? This book features over 90 pages of black and white images on the subject of trees produced for this project.

I love Cumbria, people may moan about the weather, but it is never dull for a photographer. Low clouds and rain often add atmosphere. The worst time to shoot is in the summer when the haze flattens perceptive, and everything is the same shade of green. This book is representative of my black and white photographs of the Lake District National Park, with additional photographs from the coast and the Eden Valley. I have tried to avoid the cliches, not that there is anything wrong with them, it's just that they tend to be overcrowded with people and cameras. This book contains 86 images, in roughly alphabetic order rather than geographic. All are shot on either medium format or 5x4 film over a period of twenty years. They are scanned from darkroom prints produced by myself. Original prints can be purchased, please contact me via my website for details. www.purlieu.photography

IN Press Gang, lead character journalist David Reed risks injury and death to report on voting scams, then a violent strike, is sent to cover a military battle and uncovers a scandal, has on-and-off romances after his regular girlfriend deserts him, is sent to Federal Parliament and uncovers a ghastly sex scandal, then corruption among MPs, faces peril from a gang of bogan bikies, marries and travels abroad, then becomes deeply involved in reporting on the issue of refugees in boats. The novel is fiction, but some incidents may be based on events that happened in author John Kiely's life. Kiely was a reporter, then columnist and sub-editor on the Melbourne Argus which closed in 1957. He went to Britain and worked on the Manchester Guardian, then Fleet Street papers. He returned to the Melbourne Herald, rising to Deputy Editor, and in 1978 joined The Age where over 14 years he rose to Deputy Editor. In 1993 he joined the Herald Sun as Opinion Editor, leaving journalism in 2010 at the age of 76.
