Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) war ein irischer Schriftsteller und Satiriker der frühen Aufklärung. Er hat auch unter folgenden Pseudonymen geschrieben: Isaac Bickerstaff, A Dissenter, A Person of Quality, A Person of Honour. Er studierte Theologie in Dublin. Er war von 1689-94 Sekretär des Schriftstellers Sir William Temple, danach anglikanischer Geistlicher in Kilkroot/Belfast. Von den frühen schriftstellerischen Versuchen Swifts ist wenig erhalten. Erst nach seiner Rückkehr nach Irland finden sich Schriften, die ihn als den bis heute bekannten Satiriker kennzeichnen. Sein Roman Gullivers Reisen wurde 1726 veröffentlicht. Er schrieb danach mehrfach gegen die Zustände im englisch regierten Irland. Seine bekannteste Satire ist A Modest Proposal, worin er zur Lösung von Überbevölkerung, Armut und Kriminalität vorschlägt, irische Babys als Nahrungsmittel zu nutzen und durch Export Profit daraus zu schlagen. Er schrieb danach mehrfach gegen die Zustände im englisch regierten Irland. Aus dem Buch: "Es ist ein sehr melancholischer Gedanke, dass ein Land wie unsres, während es imstande ist, alles zum Leben Nötige und das meiste, was das Leben behaglich macht, in genügender Menge hervorzubringen, um die vierfache Zahl seiner Einwohner zu ernähren, dennoch unter der schwersten Last des Elends und Mangels leben muss; dass unsere Strassen von Bettlern wimmeln und dass so viele unserer ärmeren Kaufleute, Arbeiter und Handwerker für die Ihren weder Kleidung noch Nahrung zu finden vermögen. Ich denke, es wird deshalb nicht ohne Nutzen sein, wenn ich euch die Hauptursachen dieser elenden Lage, in der wir uns befinden, darlege; dann wird man leichter sagen können, welche Hilfsmittel in unsrer Macht stehn..."

Jonathan Swift thought that England's anti-poverty proposals were so outrageously evil that nothing short of an absurd parody of them would suffice. His "Modest Proposal: For preventing the children of poor people in Ireland from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the publick" is presented with a completely straight face. The irony is this: in the three centuries since, humanity has made it increasingly difficult to find evils so absurd that no one would actually attempt them, leaving modern-day Swifts with little material to work with anymore.
