In de nadagen van de financiele crisis en in tijden van drastische overheidsbezuinigingen en politieke instabiliteit ligt de vraag naar krachtige leiders overal op de loer. De toon van dit boekje is echter: begin bij jezelf en de rest gaat wellicht nog niet vanzelf, maar zeker een heel stuk makkelijker. De dertien korte beschouwingen in deze bundel ontstonden in de afgelopen jaren uit de gesprekken die Rob van Bodegom voerde met Joseph Kessels over leidinggeven, duurzaamheid, crisis en voorspoed, inspirerende ondernemers en young professionals die iets anders willen. Verantwoordelijk leiderschap is geen handleiding voor carrieremanagers op weg naar de top. Het is eerder een zelfonderzoek naar waarden die uitnodigen en verbinden. De urgentie om het anders te doen is het vertrekpunt, en in plaats van gehoorzaamheid is het de persoonlijke gedrevenheid die voor de energie zorgt om door te gaan. Het is heel goed mogelijk om in het omgaan met organisaties verschil te maken, er uit te springen en ongewone dingen voor elkaar te krijgen zonder gebruik te maken van status, macht en spelletjes. Juist de aandacht voor respect, duurzaamheid en verantwoordelijkheid zet aan tot slimheid en vernieuwing. Leiderschap is waarschijnlijk een gedeelde kwaliteit die mensen in beweging brengt, omdat het aanstekelijk is om samen spannende en betekenisvolle avonturen te ondernemen.Een aantal beschouwingen is eerder verschenen in elektronische vorm bij het tijdschrift Building Innovation. Voor deze bundel zijn ze opnieuw bewerkt, bij elkaar gebracht en gepubliceerd ter gelegenheid van het afscheid van Joseph Kessels van het internationale advies- en onderzoeksbureau Kessels & Smit, dat hij samen met Cora Smit in 1977 oprichtte.
