Sometimes we cannot avoid court cases. In India sometimes they can run for many months or years. We may have to attend the hearings in different cities. Combined with this are problems with handling a lawyer, cross examinations, unexpected surprises from the opposite party and other issues. Court cases can thus take a huge toll not only on our finances but also our physical and mental health. Sometimes we may feel helpless and fall into deep stress or depression. However, all court cases do not have to end up this way. We can train to manage them in a more meaningful and productive way. We need to treat court cases as just part of our lives and not everything, just like the other parts of our lives. In short, we need to train how to handle court cases properly with as less stress as possible. This requires special techniques to cultivate our mental strength. In this book, we study some of the techniques on how to handle court cases and balance our lives while dealing with them.
Nowadays there are multiple options for authors in India to write and publish their book. The main options include self publishing, traditional publishing and hybrid publishing. Each of these options have their own pros and cons, and are suitable for different types of authors. In this book, we discuss the steps for an author to self-publish their manuscript. We go through the various tools and platforms currently available and how to use them. We discuss different formats for books including paperbacks, audiobooks and eBooks. We also cover some aspects of publishing specific to authors from India, for whom some services such as regional language kindle paperbacks are not available currently.
The Indian court system is a large institution. There are thousands of cases being heard daily in the different courts of the land, big and small. Some of the cases run into years and others into decades. It thus affects lakhs or crores of people. In this book, we write a few stories illustrating different aspects of the Indian court system, how it affects the common people in different situations of life. One of the stories is interpreting the timeless Indian epic, the Mahabharata, as a dispute fought in the Indian courts.None of these stories are real, any similarity with persons living or dead is purely a matter of coincidence. Our aim is to present the Indian court system from different viewpoints, and thus help the reader to gain an appreciation of the experience of different aspects of the court system for the common man. At the end of each story, we have added a section on lessons to learn from that story. The intention is to show how the common man can succeed in getting justice if they persevere, even if the process is slow and fraught with difficulties.
Labour laws govern the conditions of work and labour. They play an important role in a number of ways: for preventing exploitation by management, preventing being forced to resign, providing work security, ensuring good working conditions and creating conditions for a happier workforce. There are a number of laws and protections granted in the Indian constitution and in different labour laws. As the workplace conditions evolve, the labour laws evolve with them. Hence it is useful to have an overview of the prevailing laws and protections related to labour in India. In this book, we give an overview of the main labour laws in India, including the newer labour codes introduced in 2020 by the Indian government. We also focus on practical issues, such as what to do and whom to approach if one is unfairly dismissed from work or if one is sexually harassed at work. It is hoped that this book will help in spreading awareness about the prevailing labour laws among working people.
Ethical investing, also called Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) or sustainability investing, is growing recently. Investors, particularly younger investors, are getting more concerned over the wider social and other impact of their investments and wish to contribute to positive changes in the world, rather than contribute towards increasing suffering. The highs and lows of the stock markets in different countries further give a push towards ethical investing as a way to locate more stable companies that believe in ethical values and are more likely to be profitable in the long term. In this book, we introduce the concept of ethical investing and consider the avenues by which investors can invest ethically within India today. We discuss green energy, various ESG and ethical mutual funds and social investing avenues. List of chaptersChapter 1: Introduction to Ethical InvestingChapter 2: Advantages of ethical investingChapter 3: Guidelines for ethical investing from different religionsChapter 4: General investing principlesChapter 5: How to search for ethical investing opportunitiesChapter 6: Investing in Green EnergyChapter 7: Social InvestingChapter 8: Investing in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) mutual fundsChapter 9: Shariah compliant investingChapter 10: Wellness related companies and funds listed on NSE and BSEChapter 11: ConclusionIt is hoped that this book will raise awareness towards ethical investing and inspire existing and prospective investors to invest in a way that uses their money towards the wider good in this world.
The Indian subcontinent is the birthplace of Buddhism. Here is where the Buddha was born, where he lived and died. Here is where the first Buddhist councils were established, where the first monks practiced meditation, where the first stupas were built, where the great monasteries like Nalanda were established, where scholars from elsewhere in the Buddhist world came to learn Buddhism and so on. The earliest historical sites related to Buddhism were here too.In this book we provide an overview of historical sites related to Buddhism in the Indian subcontinent: including India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. Here too, we only mention some of the most important sites, for listing out all sites related to Buddhism is virtually impossible on account of their great number. We have also covered holy sites belonging to all the important sects of Buddhism, including Theravada and Mahayana and Vajrayana or Tibetan Buddhism. Our preference is to focus on historically important and more famous sites. For the purposes of this book, we leave out other important Asian Buddhist countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Japan for now. We will consider covering those sites in a separate book at a later time. For the purpose of covering the sites, we group them based on proximity. The author has personally visited most of the sites mentioned in this book in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The aim of this book is to provide the prospective traveler and pilgrim an overview of the sites so that they too can visit and see for themselves.
Meditation is as old as mankind. It needs almost no props, save a cushion, some instructions and an intent to meditate. It gives a number of benefits ranging from increased happiness, stress relief, a better immune system, better concentration, enhanced quality of life and so on. Some might even say it gives insight into the nature of things as they really are.We live in the technology age, where life is more fast paced than ever before and there exist a range of distractions. Many would say technology has made us more disconnected from nature and from the real world. However, technology can also be used as a tool for aiding meditation or enhancing the meditation and well-being experience, partly thanks to the variety of technologies such as EEG, tDCS, PEMF, binaural beats that can be leveraged in wearable devices. In this book, we explore a variety of wearable gadgets and apps that can help in meditation and enhancing well-being and happiness. We also share the authors' experience in using some of these apps and gadgets. It is hoped that learning about these will encourage the readers to try out some of them, and utilize them to improve their own meditation.
Property and land disputes take up the largest proportion of cases in Indian courts. A significant number of such disputes are within families, with siblings and cousins fighting with each other. This creates an unnecessary drain on the economy and on productivity. In this book we discuss the psychology of property disputes within the family and also look at some historical property disputes in India, starting from the ancient and medieval ages.In this book we briefly discuss the history of property disputes in India within the family. We also briefly cover the psychology of property disputes within siblings. We also discuss the laws related to property transfers and legal strategies one may take if they are caught in a property case.
It is said we cannot always choose our neighbors. Sometimes we may be blessed with considerate neighbors with whom we have a good relationship and who take care of us and vice versa, forming a good community. On the other hand, sometimes we may have to deal with unpleasant neighbors who cause us trouble by various means and make it a difficult to live peacefully in our own house. In this book, we study some of these problems with neighbors and discuss what to do and whom to approach to resolve such problems. We discuss problems such as noise, trespassing and harassment, issues with utilities such as water and electricity, problems related with kids, pets and plants, and ways to resolve them. We take a more practical approach and focus on practical steps one can take to fix the issues. However, we also cover legal remedies where available. This book is India specific, in that it deals mainly with common issues and legal remedies specific to India. However, many or most of the problems are common no matter which country one is from.
Patents are a key component of intellectual property and vital to the process of innovation. They serve multiple uses. One is to reward inventors and motivate them to create inventing for the betterment of society, inculcating a culture of innovation. Another is to protect inventors from getting their ideas stolen and profited from by unscrupulous people. In this book we introduce the laws related to patents and Intellectual property in India. We discuss the patent filing process in India, and other aspects of filing and persecution of patents. We also discuss the steps that are to be taken for ideation, and how to make a better patent, from the point of view of patent inventors.
Sequence memories play an important role in biological systems. This work demonstrates how a sequence memory may be built from biologically plausible spiking neural components. The memory is incorporated in a sequence machine, an automaton that can perform on-line learning and prediction of sequences of symbols. The sequence machine comprises an associative memory which is a variant of Pentti Kanerva's Sparse Distributed Memory, together with a separate memory for storing the sequence context or history. The symbols constituting a sequence are encoded as rank-ordered N-of-M codes, each code being implemented as a burst of spikes emitted by a layer of neurons. When appropriate neural structures are used the spike bursts maintain coherence and stability as they pass through successive neural layers. The system is modelled using a representation of order that abstracts time, and the abstracted system is shown to perform equivalently to a low-level spiking neural system. The spiking neural implementation of the sequence memory model highlights issues that arise when engineering high-level systems with asynchronous spiking neurons as building blocks.
