Preserved in the Abba Garima Monastery in the Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia, and according to legend written and partly illuminated by the Ethiopian missionary Abbu Garima, who arrived in Ethiopia in 494 CE. For extended periods between 1981 and 1986 the archaeologist Judith McKenzie lived in a cave at the ancient site of Petra in Jordan in order to survey and measure architectural mouldings on the rock-cut monuments. This book is an important and essential volume on the archaeology and history of one of the best-known ancient sites in the world.
