Le récit se situe à Lima (au Pérou) et dans les environs. Trois communautés y cohabitent : les espagnols successeurs des conquistadors y constituent la noblesse locale, les indiens sont dans des positions subalternes et les métis en situation intermédiaire, mal vus à la fois des espagnols et des indiens. Le juif Samuel a promis, contre une somme de 100 000 piastres, d’accorder sa fille Sarah comme épouse au riche métis André Certa. Mais Sarah - qui est fort attirée par la religion catholique - est amoureuse du jeune chef indien Martin Paz. À la suite d’une altercation avec André Certa qu’il a blessé, Martin Paz doit s’enfuir : il sème ses poursuivants en plongeant dans la rivière ; tous le croient mort mais il trouve refuge auprès du noble espagnol Don Vegal qui le prend en amitié et sous sa protection. Les indiens, ses congénères, le croient mort aussi ; ils sont en train de fomenter une révolte, et lui en veulent pour avoir porté préjudice à leur projet à cause d’une femme.

Erik Hersebom est un jeune norvégien doté d’une remarquable intelligence. Il y a cependant quelque chose qui cloche en lui : il n’a pas du tous les traits physiques caractéristiques des peuples slaves. Il a toute l’apparence d’un celte. Le docteur Schwaryencrona le prend sous son aile et finit par découvrir qu’Erik a été adopté par une famille de pêcheurs norvégiens, après avoir été sauvé du naufrage du Cynthia alors qu’il n’avait que quelques mois. Une fois grand, avec l’aide du Docteur, Erik va chercher à élucider le mystère du naufrage du Cynthia pour retrouver une trace de ses origines. Cette quête le mènera à travers les glaces polaires jusqu’en Sibérie...

Marcel Lornans et son cousin Jean Taconnat s'embarquent pour l'Algérie avec l'intention de s'engager dans les chasseurs d'Afrique. Sur le même paquebot, les époux Désirandelle, petits bourgeois bornés, et leur fils Agathocle rejoignent sa future fiancée, Louise Elissane à Oran. Ils sont accompagnés par Clovis Dardentor, ancien industriel de Perpignan, au caractère exubérant et possesseur d'une fortune confortable. Des liens amicaux se tissent entre ce dernier et les deux jeunes gens. À l'arrivée, Dardentor présente Marcel et Jean à la famille Elissane. Louise est vite conquise par le charme de Marcel, au détriment de son fiancé. Il est vrai, Agathocle est nul en tout, même en galanterie.Jean, quant à lui, poursuit une idée : sauver la vie de Dardentor afin de se faire adopter par lui. Il s'évertue à créer une occasion propice, mais, ironie du sort, c'est Dardentor qui joue les héros, en sauvant Marcel, puis Jean. Ce dernier n'arrivera jamais à ses fins, car Louise tuera le lion qui menaçait Dardentor, et c'est elle qui deviendra la fille adoptive du Perpignanais. Elle épousera Marcel. Quant à Jean, il le prendra sous sa tutelle comme « neveu adoptif ». Seuls les Désirandelle rentreront chez eux, furieux et déconfits.

La famille Zermatt, comptant deux parents et trois enfants est victime d’un naufrage au large de l’Indonésie. Ils échouent sur une île déserte, plutôt paradisiaque et vont s’y installer petit à petit avec courage et détermination, pour atteindre un réel confort sur cette grande île où ils ne manquent de rien car animaux, fruits et plantes abondent… La famille Zermatt vit aujourd’hui des jours heureux sur son île « la Nouvelle-Suisse », bien qu’espérant toujours qu’un navire les récupère. Ce navire arrive enfin : il s’agit de la Licorne, vaisseau de guerre britannique...

Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon is a novel by Jules Verne, published in 1881. It has also been published as The Giant Raft. Unlike many of his other novels, this story does not have any science fiction elements. It is an adventure novel. This novel involves how Joam Garral, a ranch owner who lives near the Peruvian-Brazilian border on the Amazon River, is forced to travel down-stream when his past catches up with him. Most of the novel is situated on a large jangada (a Brazilian timber raft) that is used by Garral and his family to float to Belém at the river's mouth. Many aspects of the raft, scenery, and journey are described in detail.
