Taskinar aus Stockton für die Summe von 4.000.000 Dollar die Insel Spencer, die 862 km vor der Küste Kaliforniens liegt. Kolderup plant, seine sechzehnjährige Adoptivtochter Phina Halloney mit seinem ebenfalls bei ihm aufgewachsenen elternlosen Neffen Godfrey zu verheiraten. Bevor er eine Ehe eingeht, will Godfrey jedoch eine längere Weltreise machen und Abenteuer in der Art wie Robinson Crusoe erleben, da er bisher von der Welt eigentlich nur San Francisco kennt. Phina ist bereit zwei Jahre auf Godfrey zu warten.

Der Walfänger Saint Enoch soll zu seiner nächsten Walfangreise auslaufen. Es gibt zwei Gründe warum das Schiff seine Reise nicht beginnen kann. Zwei wichtige Posten bei der Besatzung sind noch nicht besetzt. Es fehlt der wichtige Schiffsarzt und der bordeigene Böttcher. Der Böttcher wird zur Konservierung des Fanges auf dem Walfänger benötigt, da er die Aufgabe hat, defekte Fässer zu reparieren und nach der Gewinnung des Trans die Fässer zu verschließen. Der junge Dr. Filhiol bewirbt sich als Schiffsarzt. Kapitän Bourcart ist sofort von ihm begeistert. Dr. Filhiol hat noch einen zusätzlichen Tipp. Er schlägt den zweiundfünfzigjährigen Jean-Marie Cabidoulin als Teilnehmer der Expedition vor. Cabidoulin ist ein alter Seebär und ist schon seit seiner Jugend auf den Weltmeeren unterwegs. Er ist voller Aberglauben und macht düstere Prophezeiungen, was ihn bei den anderen Seeleuten unbeliebt macht. Kapitän Bourcart hat jedoch keine Alternative und stimmt zu, Cabidoulin anzuheuern. Da es sich um ein Vorzeigesanatorium handelt, wird es immer wieder von interessierten Personen besucht, so auch durch einen Grafen d''Artigas. Dieser nutzt den Besuch jedoch, um zusammen mit seinen Gehilfen die Entführung des Erfinders und seines Pflegers durchzuführen. Im weiteren Verlauf der Handlung werden die Entwicklungen aus der Sicht des Simon Hart wiedergegeben. Dieser hat zunächst für sich das Rätsel zu lösen, wie die Goélette des Grafen trotz nicht gesetzter Segel und nicht vorhandenem Motor bewegt wird. Die Lösung wird ihm erst am Ziel der Reise, der Insel Back Cup auf den Bermudas, klar, als er mit einem U-Boot in das Innere dieser Insel gebracht wird.
