Wenn einst im alten Rom und im schönen Griechenland... Doch nein, Vergebung, liebenswürdige Leserin, wir befinden uns im modernen Berlin und sogar in der Nähe von Dingen und Menschen, die dich über das Kastanienwäldchen leichter orientieren dürften als eine Vergleichung unseres Gegenstandes mit dem alten Rom und dem schönen Griechenland. Dort an Rauchs großartigem Reiterstandbild des »Alten Fritz« steht die Menge und gafft ein Spiegelfenster an der Ecke eines mit Fahnen geschmückten Palais an. Man streitet, wohnt dort »der König« oder »die Königin«? Man sucht sich über die innere Einrichtung landesväterlicher oder landesmütterlicher Wohnungen nach dem Schimmer einzelner Vasen oder Statuetten oder glänzender Gummibäume zu unterrichten.

Aus den Intrigen, welche die erste Aufführung des »Tartüffe« von Molière verhindern sollten, einen neuen »Tartüffe« zu bilden, hatte schon Goldoni versucht. Ohne diesen Vorausgang unter den hundert Lustspielen und Possen des Venezianers zu kennen, las ich das betreffende Stück erst, als meine Arbeit bereits vielfach gegeben war. Der Richtung seiner Zeit und den strengen Theatergesetzen eines Jahrhunderts gemäß, wo in Rom die Frauenrollen noch von Männern gespielt wurden, hielt sich Goldoni, ohne die Heuchelei im Lichte seiner Zeit schärfer auszuführen, an dieselbe enge Familiensphäre, in welcher sich der Scheinheilige bei Molière bewegt. Seine Wiedergabe der Molièreschen Fabel scheint mir frostig zu sein. Vorstehendes Lustspiel wurde im Sommer 1844 geschrieben und nahm seine nächste Veranlassung aus dem Geist und den Kämpfen der damaligen Zeit. Am Bundestage, in Österreich, in Sachsen, in Preußen waren die Bücher-, Zeitungs- und Dramenverbote an der Tagesordnung. Rücksichtslos gingen die polizeilichen Maßnahmen über die Lebensinteressen der Autoren hinweg. Eine kalte, mumienhaft vertrocknete Praxis der Zensurbehörden kümmerte sich um keine Bitte, keine Versicherung, die Harmlosigkeit der ihnen vorgelegten Erfindungen betreffend; in Preußen herrschte eine Koterie höherer Polizei- und Regierungsbeamten, deren oberster Chef, Tzschoppe, mit fixen, man könnte sagen, Alba-Ideen und schon als ein Irrer umging, während er noch den Staatsrat besuchte.

Ob man bei Stehely einen Begriff von der Verberlinerung der Literatur bekommen kann¿ ganz gewiß, oder man müßte sich täuschen in dieser stummen Bewegungssprache, die einen Haufen von Zeitschriften mit wilder Begier und neidischem Blick zusammenträgt, ihn mit der Linken sichert und mit der Rechten eine nach der andern vor die starren, teilnahmslosen Gesichtszüge hält. Die Eisenstange und das Schloß des Journals scheint mit schwerer Gewalt auch seine Zunge zu fesseln¿wer würde hier seinen Nachbar auf eine interessante Notiz aufmerksam machen? Ein feindliches Heer könnte eine Meile von Berlin entfernt sein, kein Mensch würde die Geschichte vortragen, man würde auf den Druck warten und auch dann noch ein Exemplar durch aller Hände wandern lassen¿fast in der Weise, wie in Stralow die honetten Leute vor jeder lebhafteren Gruppe vorbeigehen mit dem tröstenden Zuruf, man würd' es ja morgen gedruckt lesen.Stehelys Besucher bilden natürlich zwei Klassen, die Jungen und die Alten, mit der näheren Bezeichnung, daß die Jungen ans Alter, die Alten an die Jugend denken. Jene sind Literaten in der guten Hoffnung, einst sich so zu sehen, wie man jetzt die Klassiker sieht, weihrauchumnebelt; diese sind Beamte, alte Offiziers, die in einem Atem von den politischen Stellungen des preußischen Staats, den Füßen der Elsler, den Koloraturen der Sontag, dem Spiel der Schechner sprechen! Nichts Unerbaulicheres! Vor dem Gespräch dieser alten Gecken möchte man sich die Ohren zuhalten, oder in die einsamere Klause des letzten Zimmers flüchten. Schon wenn sie angestiegen kommen, zumal jetzt im Winter; diese dummen, loyalen Gesichter, diese Socken und Pelzschuhe, deren Tritt nicht das leiseste Ohr erspähen könnte. Triumphierend rufen sie um die "Staatszeitung", forschen nach den privatoffiziellen Erklärungen eines H., v. R., v. Wsn. Hierauf lesen sie die Berliner Korrespondenzen in der "Allgemeinen Zeitung", die ja wohl der Ausdruck der Berliner öffentlichen Meinung, als wenn es eine solche gäbe, sein sollen, und wenn sie sich dann noch an den logischen Demonstrationen der Mitteilungen aus der "Posener Zeitung" gestärkt haben, fallen sie übers Theater her und man muß sie verlassen. Ihnen am nächsten stehen einige langgestreckte Gardeleutnants und Referendare, die sich dadurch unterscheiden, daß die einen viel sprechen und wenig denken, die andern wenig denken und viel sprechen. Diese geben den Übergang zu den schon vorhin bezeichneten Jüngeren, auf die wir unten des breiteren zurückkommen müssen.
