When Death, a gorgeous and painfully vain yet misunderstood member of heaven's team, is caught in the middle of a power play between God and the devil, she must decide if she'll retire forever in the lap of luxury or risk her beauty, her celestial status, and even her own life by stepping in to save the suffering human race who have always hated her. And God? He's playing golf with the other two members of the Trinity.
The stories, poems, and a musical piece in My Piano Hands share the author's journey to understand why she was born able to play piano by ear. Given up for adoption as a baby, the writer grew up searching for answers and wondering whether something was expected in return for her undeserved talent. This touching flash-memoir collection takes the reader sometimes wistfully, but mostly irreverently and philosophically, through a life bridging a 1950s childhood and COVID-19 adulthood pairing life's burning questions with tuna fish sandwiches, a Parisian summer, and an impractical old white sofa that knows all and reveals nothing.
When I wrote the poem "Light the Light," I had no idea I wanted to be a writer. I had given a copy to my mom and forgotten about it. When she presented me with a hand-stitched sampler with the poem on it a few years later, I was truly surprised...barely remembering that I'd even written it! Isn't it cool? Our moms are the best. What you are about to read represents twenty years of musings. You will meet some funny and sad characters, and you will know me. Author Bio: Kathryn Atkins was adopted. Yes. It was my adopted mom that did the sampler. It was she that encouraged Kathryn to play the piano, dance, and tackle life freely. It was Kathryn's dad that encouraged her to get an MBA. Kathryn is married, has two grown sons, and works hard to inspire fellow writers through the California Writers Club.
