This book explores the existing inequities within the U.S. healthcare system and their impacts on individuals and in particular Black women, who seek life-saving healthcare. It deals with the social and economic costs of a healthcare system that fails to provide equitable care to everyone in need.

Drawing on the observations, and examination of the responses of a diverse group of black men who date (in some cases exclusively), have sexual relations with, and marry women who are not of African descent, the book provides insight into the continuing ways that race and ethnic status affect the choices people make in their lives.
