Aftentid og morgengry er en mesterlig fortelling om ambisjoner og rivalisering, død og fødsel, hat og kjærlighet. Året er 997 og England er under angrep fra alle kanter. Kongens grep om landet er svekket, de mektige utnytter de svakeste, og blodsutgytelser er dagligdagse. Steve er jusstudent, mistenkt for en brutal vodtekt. Dennis er en dømt morder. De ble født av to forskjellige mødre på to forskjellige dager i året. Likevel er de like som to dråper vann. Mektige krefter vil gjøre alt for å holde fortidens hemmeligheter skjult.

I 1327 ser fire barn fra Kingsbridge at to menn blir drept. Som voksne lever de i skyggen av de uforklarlige mordene. Dette er en frittstående oppfølger til Stormenes tid.
To uker før D-dagen angriper den franske motstandsbevegelsen et slott hvor det finnes en telefonlinje som er viktig for tysk kommunikasjon. Men bygningen er godt bevoktet, og angrepet blir en fiasko. Flick Clairet, en britisk hemmelig agent, foreslår en ny plan. Hun vil sende et kvinneteam til Frankrike, som skal komme seg inn i slottet. Det hun ikke vet er at Rommel har ansatt en etterretningsagent som har som oppgave å knuse den franske motstanden. Og han er på sporet av Flick.
