The text itself reads well, and its poetry and puns are good. However, the translator-Anatolii Frenkel¿ a.k.a. A. D'Aktil¿ (1890-1942)-cuts quite a repulsive figure. Frenkel¿ was a creator of enthusiastic hymns praising the new dictatorial regime. Known to the millions over the decades was his March of Budenny's Cavalry (1920). '"Give us Warsaw, give us Berlin-and here we plough into the Crimea!"')-a message of the World Revolution carried on the bayonets of the Red Army. Frenkel¿'s Alice translation bears no traces of his Communist allegiances or a recent Civil War propaganda. His puns are quite inventive, with especially good phonetic equivalents for Carroll's school puns. One feels that his book is directed not only at children but also, tongue-in-cheek, at their parents.

With satire, adventure, and imagination, Phantasmagoria and Other Poems explores subjects such as the supernatural, love, friendship, and nature. Featuring sixteen of Lewis Carroll¿s poems, Phantasmagoria and Other Poems has something to appeal to everyone. Among this collection is A Sea Dirge, in which the speaker, equipped with evocative figurative language, explains their contempt for the sea. In Echoes, a young girl discloses her encounter with a ghost. With precise diction, A Game of Fives takes the form of a nursery rhyme as the poem follows five girls as they age, mapping their changing relationship and value to society. At the height of Carroll¿s use of satire and humor, A Valentine is dedicated to a friend that was concerned that Carroll had not been sad enough when he was away. With wit and decorated lyricism, Carroll replies to his concern. The title poem in Phantasmagoria and Other Poems is known as Carroll¿s longest piece of poetry, and has been hailed as a fan favorite. Following an odd man named Tibbets, Phantasmagoria tells the tale of a man getting candid with the ghost that haunts him. Presented as a narrative discussion, Tibbets asks the ghost why they are haunting him, prompting the ghost to tell all the responsibilities a ghost has. Haunting is the ghost¿s new job, and they must toe the company line unless they want to answer to the king of the dead. With a meta and whimsical approach, Phantasmagoria and Other Poems explores adventurous stories, the supernatural, and relationships. Soaked with satire and imagination, Phantasmagoria and Other Poems is an entertaining, approachable experience with poetry. Each poem delights with dazzling word play and rhythm as it uses accessible language and strong imagery, crafting poetry that is easy for a wide audience to enjoy. Now presented in a readable font and redesigned with an eye-catching new cover, Phantasmagoria and Other Poems by Lewis Carroll is the perfect companion for anyone searching for an escape.

The Hunting of the Snark (1876) is a poem by Lewis Carroll. Filled with many of the portmanteau words developed for his poem ¿Jabberwocky,¿ The Hunting of the Snark is a delightfully strange tale of mystery and adventure. Often read as an allegory for everything from tuberculosis to the endless quest for happiness itself, The Hunting of the Snark, much like the Snark itself, refuses all description. ¿¿Just the place for a Snark!¿ the Bellman cried, / As he landed his crew with care; / Supporting each man on the top of the tide / By a finger entwined in his hair.¿ Driven more by rhyme than reason, the adventure opens in medias res, introducing its varied crew of men and beasts of questionable use: a Boots, a Barrister, a Broker, a maker of Bonnets and Hoods, a Billiard-maker, a Banker, and, of course, a Beaver. Sailors all, they sail into the unknown. The Snark they search for may not be a Snark, could be a Boojum, and may very well be deadly. Intrepid and wisely foolish, they set out to comb the island for the Snark, armed with tricks and bribes, ¿smiles and soap,¿ and all the other instruments of hope. Playful and strange, the Snark eludes us all. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Lewis Carroll¿s The Hunting of the Snark is a classic work of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Alice discovers an unknown land on the other side of the mirror and finds herself part of a problem in chess, meeting some unlikely characters of nursery rhyme and puzzled by the reversal of many of the laws of nature. The follow-up to Alice in Wonderland, originally appeared in 1871 and has not been out of print since. Curious Alice finds her way through a mirror into an amazing alternate world that is, in some ways, a reverse version of our own. This surreal new dimension proves to be much more than that, as Alice discovers that her passage through it requires moving correctly across a chessboard landscape while encountering a string of nursery rhyme characters brought to bewildering life. Readers will find themselves confronted by one iconic moment after another, as Alice meets the Red Queen, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, encounters the poems, Jabberwocky and The Walrus and the Carpenter all presented in seemingly infinitely quotable prose. Despite repeated attempts down the years to reinterpret Through the Looking Glass as a social, political or religious allegory the book stands outside such concerns as a timeless classic of the imagination. It remains one of the most universally beloved children¿s books in English, and cherished by adults as much, or perhaps even more, than it is by children. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Through the Looking Glass is both modern and readable.

A special edition with twenty-eight beautiful original full-colour illustrations."A book of that extremely rare kind which will belong to all the generations to come until the language becomes obsolete" - Walter Besant."The book changed young people's literature. It helped to replace stiff Victorian didacticism with a looser, sillier, nonsense style that reverberated through the works of language-loving 20th-century authors as different as James Joyce, Douglas Adams and Dr Seuss." - TIME"Lewis Carroll's brilliant nonsense tale is one of the most influential and best-loved in the English canon." - Robert McCrumLewis Carroll has entranced children and adults with these delightful, playful and intriguing stories ever since he first told them to the ten-year-old Alice Liddell while rowing on the Thames in Oxford, England. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland began a new era in children's literature, where the goal was to entertain and delight the reader instead of merely educating. His mischievous, light-hearted wordplay and fantasy anticipate Dr Seuss. This thoroughly delightful book "has a dreamlike unreality peopled with some of the most entertaining characters in English literature. The White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Mock Turtle, the Cheshire Cat and the King and Queen of Hearts are simply the most memorable of a cast from which every reader will find his or her favourite." (Robert McCrum). It is little surprise that it has been repeatedly adapted for the stage and the screen and even computer games. This lavishly illustrated special edition contains twenty-eight beautiful original full-colour illustrations, including many full-page illustrations by Sir John Tenniel and Arthur Rackham and eleven monochrome drawings by Rackham. Almost every two-page spread has an illustration. The modern twelve-point font will be easy for a child to read and enjoy Carroll's delightful style. A wonderful gift for any child or parent.Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914), a prominent Victoria illustrator and cartoonist, was the principal cartoonist for Punch magazine for over 50 years. He was the first illustrator to be knighted.Arthur Rackham (1867 - 1939) was a leading figure in the Golden Age of children's illustration. His influence extended past his death and can be seen in Disney's approach to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 - 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an Oxford mathematician and logician, an early photographer, and a leading Victorian author. He is best remembered for his children's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

A Tangled Tale is a collection of 10 brief humorous stories by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), published serially between April 1880 and March 1885 in The Monthly Packet magazine. Arthur B. Frost added illustrations when the series was printed in book form. The stories, or Knots as Carroll calls them, present mathematical problems. In a later issue, Carroll gives the solution to a Knot and discusses readers' answers. The mathematical interpretations of the Knots are not always straightforward. The ribbing of readers answering wrongly - giving their names - was not always well received (see Knot VI below). In the December 1885 book preface Carroll writes:The writer's intention was to embody in each Knot (like medicine so dexterously, but ineffectually, concealed in the jam of our early childhood) one or more mathematical questions - in Arithmetic, Algebra, or Geometry, as the case might be - for the amusement, and possible edification, of the fair readers of that magazine.Describing why he was ending the series, Carroll writes to his readers that the Knots were "but a lame attempt". Others were more receptive: In 1888 Stuart Dodgson Collingwood wrote "With some people, this is the most popular of all his books; it is certainly the most successful attempt he ever made to combine mathematics and humour." They have more recently been described as having "all the charm and wit of his better-known works". (wikipedia.org)
