"Summary of Christian Doctrine" by Louis Berkhof is an essential resource for anyone seeking a foundational understanding of Christian beliefs from a Reformed perspective. Aimed initially at high school students, this concise work distills Berkhof's larger "Systematic Theology" into a more accessible format without sacrificing depth. It covers a broad range of topics such as God and creation, humanity's relation to God, Christ's person and work, the application of redemption, the church and means of grace, and eschatology. Berkhof's methodical approach ensures that each doctrine is thoroughly explained, making it an excellent tool for both personal and group study. The inclusion of review questions and suggestions for further study at the end of each chapter enhances its value as a teaching aid and encourages deeper exploration of the faith.

The book discusses the major areas of Christian belief from a classic Reformed perspective. He covers areas like Theology proper, Anthropology, Christology, Soteriology, Ecclesiology, and Eschatology (such strange but essential terms!) And for each topic discussed, there is a historical overview. Thus, one gets a good dose of historical theology along with systematic theology. I found his definitions quite helpful in crystallizing a doctrine and making it sink in. Consider, for instance, his definition of God's holiness: "That perfection of God, in virtue of which He eternally wills and maintains His own moral excellence, abhors sin, and demands purity in his moral creatures." Concise. Clear. Powerful. This is an absolute essential work for any serious student of the Scriptures and as a service guide to their Christian Faith.

This is the most important 20th century compendium of Reformed Theology. Louis Berkhof's loyalty to the well-defined lines of the Reformed faith, his concise and compact style and his up-to date treatment have made this work the most important twentieth century compendium of Reformed theology. 'The work seemed particularly important to me', writes the author, 'in view of the widespread doctrinal indifference of the present day, of the resulting superficiality and confusion in the minds of many professing Christians, of the insidious errors that are zealously propagated even from the pulpits, and of the alarming increase of all kinds of sects. If there ever was a time when the church ought to guard her precious heritage, the deposit of the truth that was entrusted to her care, that time is now'.Professor Berkhof died in 1957, at the age of 83. He was an outstanding American teacher and the author of some 22 books. After two pastorates, he began his long career as professor at Calvin Seminary, Grand Rapids, in 1906. Here he remained for 38 years, devoting his talents and immense stores of knowledge to the training of men for the ministry. His Systematic Theology was his magnum opus, being revised and enlarged during his lifetime until it reached its present final form.

Introduction to the New Testament is designed for students and general readers, and directs its readers toward a greater appreciation for New Testament writings. This book includes an extended analysis of literature on the New Testament, including Berkhof's own appraisal of the most influential 19th century New Testament scholars. Although Berkhof's subject is the Bible, his pursuit is unapologetically theological: he aims to explain why the church reads and honors the New Testament as the Word of God, and to vindicate the claims of the canonical books against the criticism of modernist skeptics. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

Louis Berkhof (1873-1957) is best known for his one volume "Systematic Theology", that has gone through numerous editions and been translated in numerous languages. Here we have the humble genius of Berkhof in a small but priceless study on the subject close to the heart of everyone concerned about eternity. In his own words: "This little book is born of the conviction that the subject of the assurance of faith deserves more attention that it often receives in the present day. We are not living in an age in which Christian certitude can be taken for granted. The enemy is exerting himself to destroy the foundation which God has laid for our faith in his excellent Word. Doubts respecting the most fundamental truths of the Bible are rampant everywhere and are making inroads in the Church of Jesus Christ. Question-marks are fast taking the place of positive assertions of the truth. Such an atmosphere is not conducive to the assurance of salvation, but threatens to rob the Christian of this precious gem. It is hoped that this little treatise may be of some service in the cultivation of assurance especially among our rising generation."
