Eine Türe in der Mitte, eine Türe links.FRAU GISELIUS stellt auf einen weißgedeckten kleinen Nebentisch ein Blumenbukett und ordnet einige Geschenke, die dort liegen.PROFESSOR GISELIUS tritt durch die Mitte ein. Nun frage ich zum dritten Mal, wo sind meine Zeitungen?FRAU GISELIUS sich halb umwendend. Dort auf'm Flügel.PROFESSOR GISELIUS. M-ja, richtig. Nimmt sie weg. Es ist merkwürdig, daß ich jeden Tag eine Forschungsreise nach meinen Morgenblättern machen muß. Warum liegen sie nicht in dem dazu angebrachten Behälter?FRAU GISELIUS. Weil sie der Herr Geheimrat jed'smal herausnimmt und irgendwohin legt.PROFESSOR GISELIUS. So? Sich nach ihr umsehend. Was machst du denn eigentlich da, Tildchen?

FRAU BEZIRKSAMTMANN. So? Und darum muß ich zusehen, daß du ein sündteures Festessen gibst, daß mir der Salon und der Gang verschmutzt wird. Das ist mir eine nette Logik!BEZIRKSAMTMANN. Da wären wir nun glücklich wieder da, wo wir anfingen. FRAU BEZIRKSAMTMANN. Du hast es scheinbar nicht vermocht, mich zu überzeugen. BEZIRKSAMTMANN. Auf diesen Erfolg rechne ich schon lange nicht mehr.FRAU BEZIRKSAMTMANN. Spotte nur! Das fehlt noch, um deiner Rücksichtslosigkeit die Krone aufzusetzen. Nicht bloß, daß du mich von der Frau deines Untergebenen mit Füßen treten läßt ...BEZIRKSAMTMANN. Aber ...FRAU BEZIRKSAMTMANN. Es ist so! Aber nicht genug damit, du verlangst sogar, daß ich niedrige Dienste leiste, um den Triumph dieser Kreatur zu erhöhen. Das ist schändlich! Das ist empörend!BEZIRKSAMTMANN der verzweifelt auf und ab gegangen ist, bleibt vor ihr stehen. Amalia, bist du imstande, mich zwei Minuten ruhig anzuhören?FRAU BEZIRKSAMTMANN sehr energisch. Nein!BEZIRKSAMTMANN. Dann beantworte mir wenigstens die Frage, wer hat von dir verlangt, daß du bei dieser ... bei dieser Sache tätig sein sollst?FRAU BEZIRKSAMTMANN sehr getragen. Das wollte ich sehen, von wem ich mir Befehle erteilen lasse.

Meine Mutter sagte: »Ach Gott ja, übermorgen kommt die Schwägerin.«Und da machte sie einen großen Seufzer, als wenn der Bindinger da wäre und von meinem Talent redet.Und Ännchen hat ihre Kaffeetasse weggeschoben und hat gesagt, es schmeckt ihr nicht mehr, und wir werden schon sehen, daß die Tante den Amtsrichter beleidigt und daß alles schlecht geht. »Warum hast du sie eingeladen?« sagte sie.»Ich habe sie doch gar nicht eingeladen,« sagte meine Mutter, »sie kommt doch immer ganz von selber.«»Man muß sie hinausschmeißen,« sagte ich.»Du sollst nicht so unanständig reden,« sagte meine Mutter, »du mußt denken, daß sie die Schwester von deinem verstorbenen Papa ist. Und überhaupt bist du zu jung.«»Aber wenn ihr sie doch gar nicht mögt,« habe ich gesagt, »und wenn sie den Amtsrichter beleidigt, daß er Ännchen nicht heiratet, und sie freut sich schon so darauf. Vielleicht sagt sie ihm, daß er schielt.«Da hat Ännchen mich angeschrien: »Er schielt doch gar nicht, du frecher Lausbub, und jetzt spricht er, daß ich heiraten will, und die Leute reden es herum. Nein, nein, ich halte es nicht mehr aus, ich gehe in die Welt und nehme eine Stellung.«Da ist meine Mutter ganz unglücklich geworden und hat gerufen: »Aber Kindchen, du darfst nicht weinen. Es wird alles recht werden, und, in Gottes Namen, der Besuch von der Tante wird auch vorüber gehen.«Das ist am Montag gewesen, und am Mittwoch ist sie gekommen. Wir sind alle drei auf die Bahn gegangen, und meine Mutter hat immer gesagt: »Ännchen, mache ein freundliches Gesicht! Sonst haben wir schon heute Verdruß.«Da hat der Zug gepfiffen, und sie ist herausgestiegen und hat geschrien: »Ach Gott! ach Gott! Da seid ihr ja alle! Oh, wie ich mich freue! Helft mir nur, daß ich mein Gepäck herauskriege!«

Von meinem Zimmer aus konnte ich in den Vollbeckschen Garten sehen, weil die Rückseite unseres Hauses gegen die Korngasse hinausging. Wenn ich nachmittags meine Schulaufgaben machte, sah ich Herrn Rat Vollbeck mit seiner Frau beim Kaffee sitzen, und ich hörte fast jedes Wort, das sie sprachen. Er fragte immer: »Wo ist denn nur unser Gretchen so lange?« und sie antwortete alle Tage: »Ach Gott, das arme Kind studiert wieder einmal.« Ich hatte damals, wie heute, kein Verständnis dafür, daß ein Mensch gerne studiert und sich dadurch vom Kaffeetrinken oder irgend etwas anderem abhalten lassen kann. Dennoch machte es einen großen Eindruck auf mich, obwohl ich dies nie eingestand. Wir sprachen im Gymnasium öfters von Gretchen Vollbeck, und ich verteidigte sie nie, wenn einer erklärte, sie sei eine ekelhafte Gans, die sich bloß gescheit mache.

Indem das es jez schon zum zweiten mahle ist das ich drukt wehrde mus es nichd gar so thum sein als wies habscheilinge mentschen behaubden und klaube ich schon das meine bolidik eine sähr guthe ist.Disses ist die schprache nichd fon ein studirthen mentschen sontern fon einen bidernen landmahn wodurch mahn es weis das ich das härz auf den rächten fleg hawe und nicht dorth wos der biamthe had der wo die bedirfnise insernes folks nichdmer siecht bahld iem die Briehlenglaßel anlauffen.Sontern es ist geschriem fon einen folksmahn der wo am bfluge stät und einwändig fohler aufriechtikeid ißt und keihne fallscheid durchauß gahr nichd kent.durch disses hawen die mentschen ein wollgefahlen an meiner schrieft und schprechen im lahden ob es nichd schohn wider ein biechlein gibt fon dissem wakheren bauersmahn mid namens Jozef Filser wo so dreihärzig die schprache des folkes kehnt und fileichd in der boliedik nichd gans so thum ist da gibt es benifitzi und kohbrater wo auf ladeinisch studirrt hawen und kehnen aber kein biechlein nichd zusahmen schreim sonter blos ier fozmäul aufreisen fohler has und neit gengen den einfeltingen son des folks wo jäz schohn beriehmt ist und lasens iere schlächte wollußt aus aber hielft nichz indem die leithe nichd ieren schmahrn läsen wohlen sontern das biechlein fon dissem Jozef Filser. damit das sich aber ein jäder auskehnt wiel ich es beschreim wie die bolidiek in baiern ißt und kahn jädermahn durch disses mich ferstehn.
