Within a Budding Grove beautifully examines the complex adolescent relationships that the unnamed young narrator begins to witness all around him, including the first pangs of love and the ardent adolescent desires. But most importantly it explores the unbridgeable gap between childhood innocence and the disappointment of adulthood. The novel was scheduled to be published in 1914 but was delayed by the onset of World War I. When published, the novel was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1919. "My mother, when it was a question of our having M. de Norpois to dinner for the first time, having expressed her regret that Professor Cottard was away from home, and that she herself had quite ceased to see anything of Swann, since either of these might have helped to entertain the old Ambassador . . ." Du côté de chez Swann est un roman de Marcel Proust, c'est le premier volume de À la recherche du temps perdu. Il est composé de trois parties, dont les titres sont : Combray, Un amour de Swann et Nom de pays : le nom. Proust commence à rédiger « Combray » de façon suivie fin mai, début juin 1909. Une pré-publication des fragments de « Combray » paraît dans Le Figaro entre mars 1912 et mars 1913. Le premier tome de La Recherche fut refusé par plusieurs éditeurs, dont Gallimard, avant d'être publié par Grasset à compte d'auteur le 14 novembre 1913. Dans Combray, le narrateur raconte son enfance à Combray, sa relation avec sa mère dont il réclame la présence le soir avant de se coucher. Il évoque ses premières lectures, notamment François le Champi de George Sand. On voit se dessiner l'univers culturel et affectif d'un personnage dont on va suivre la vie et l'évolution pendant le reste de la Recherche. C'est aussi dans « Combray » qu'apparaît le personnage de Swann et surtout c'est là que naît la fascination du narrateur pour les Guermantes qui ne le quittera qu'une fois qu'il aura pénétré ce milieu qui lui semble si inaccessible et merveilleux.
