Vom höchsten Gut und vom größten Übel ist ein philosophisches Werk des römischen Redners, Politikers und Philosophen Marcus Tullius Cicero. Es besteht aus fünf Büchern, in denen sich Cicero mit den Philosophierichtungen des epikureischen Hedonismus, der Stoa und des Peripatos auseinandersetzt und diese dem römischen Leser vorstellt. Das Leitthema des Werkes ist die Frage nach dem anzustrebenden höchsten Gut. Es entstand im Sommer des Jahres 45 v. Chr. innerhalb von etwa anderthalb Monaten. Zusammen mit den kurz danach geschriebenen Tusculanae disputationes ("Gespräche in Tusculum") ist De finibus das umfangreichste philosophische Werk Ciceros. Gewidmet ist das Werk Marcus Iunius Brutus. Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 v. Chr. - † 43 v. Chr.) war ein römischer Politiker, Anwalt, Schriftsteller und Philosoph, der berühmteste Redner Roms und Konsul im Jahr 63 v. Chr.

cicero, als der unbestrittene Meister der romischen Beredsamkeit in Theorie und Praxis, hat sich in mehreren Werken mit der Theorie der Rhetorik befasst. In seinen "e;Partitiones oratoriae"e; stellt er die Rhetorik als System dar. Der literarischen Form nach handelt es sich um einen Dialog oder einen Katechismus in Frage und Antwort: Sohn Marcus darf seinen Vater im Urlaub anhand einer griechischen Vorlage examinieren. Uber die Datierung des Werks besteht keine Ubereinstimmung: Einiges spricht fur seine Entstehung im Jahre 56 v. Chr., vieles dafur, dass es erst zehn Jahre spater niedergeschrieben wurde. Das straff gegliederte Werk gibt einen ausgezeichneten Einblick in die vielfaltigen Anforderungen, denen ein Redner gerecht werden musste und auch heute noch genugen muss.
