Sometimes, after a night match, once the crowds and players have gone and the floodlights snap off, they come out once more: swaying crowds on the terraces looking on expectantly, silently applauding at long-gone players in oversized shirts and shorts, passing and running, chasing the ball across the pitch. People, for whom it meant just as much as it does to us today. They dissolve back into darkness. Then the nightwatchman starts on his rounds. The nightwatchman (or woman) guards not just the football ground but also the soul of the club that is at the heart of the town, and has done so for a century or more. They preserve and tell the stories that make the club more than just a football team on the road to nowhere: stories of deaths and births, of tragedy and joy echoing down the years - the ghosts of the past that will never leave this sacred place. Charlie Truckle's tenure is coming to an end - what will happen to the Town's legacy then?
Another Bloody Saturday is a book celebrating all that makes football the sport that it is. It explores the passions and devotion of those that support a team, a nation, a dream. By exploring football in the lower leagues and non-league, as well as lesser known clubs and nations abroad, the book attempts to reveal the true soul of football that is often lost among the glitz and glamour of the premier League and the Champions League. Ultimately, Another Bloody Saturday is about all that makes football so captivating and all-encompassing to so many, making a supporter's team and club a near religion. A small selection of clubs featured include: Accrington Stanley, Bangor City, Partick Thistle, Tibetan National Team, Bhutan National Team, Bristol Rovers and Arsenal Ladies.
On his travels, he watches matches in Iceland, interviews members of the Tibetan Women's Football team, explores the impact of football in war-torn Palestine and explores the unsung heroes in the football clubs present throughout the length of the UK.
