Diese fotografische Liebesgeschichte führt ihre Betrachter durch 55 Jahre der Zusammenarbeit und Partnerschaft von June und Helmut Newton. Es ist die Chronik ihres gemeinsamen Lebens, die sie 1998 erstmals mit ihrem legendärem Gemeinschaftsprojekt Us and Them öffentlich dokumentierten.   ¿ Der erste Teil des Buches - das Us - zeigt persönliche Porträts voneinander sowie Selbstporträts voller Zuneigung und Intimität. Über mehrere Jahrzehnte hinweg entstanden, erzählt jede Fotografie von der zärtlichen Sehnsucht nach dem Damals. In diesem fotografischen Tagebuch richtet sich das Kameraobjektiv auf das gemeinsame Leben von Helmut und June Newton abseits der Öffentlichkeit.  Der zweite Teil - Them - ist eine glamouröse Reise durch die Zeit, bei der die Linse der Fotografen zahlreiche Protagonisten des kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Jetsets in unvergleichlicher Ästhetik einfing. Catherine Deneuve, Anjelica Huston, David Hockney und Timothy Leary wurden dabei ebenso in Szene gesetzt wie Peter Beard, Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler, Jane Birkin oder Charlotte Rampling. Die von June und Helmut Newton in verschiedenen Fotoshootings aufgenommenen Porträts stehen sich jeweils paarweise gegenüber und offenbaren auf diese Weise zwei Facetten derselben Persönlichkeit. Ebenso eindeutig wie elegant präsentiert sich in diesem Band die faszinierende Melange von Leben und Werk beider Künstler, die sich perfekt ergänzten.

From well-known portraits of Monaco's "beautiful people" to rarely seen landscapes, this collection of images documents two decades of Helmut Newton's love affair with a sun-kissed world. Helmut Newton was in his 60s and a well-established photographer when he and his wife moved to the Riviera. At an age when many people would consider beginning retirement, Newton instead plunged headfirst into one of the most prolific and liberating stages of his career. The city of Monaco was the perfect backdrop for his fashion photography, and it also provided him with a wealth of subjects for his famous portraits, including the stars of the Ballet de Monte-Carlo and the Princely Family. And it was in Monaco that Newton finally tried his hand at landscapes. While this volume focuses primarily on the years of 1981-2004, it also looks at Newton's historic links with the Côte d'Azur and the area around Bordighera, Italy. There are essays by a range of experts in the field of photography, film, and art and three interviews, including one with Paloma Picasso. In these remarkable photographs readers will discover the Riviera through Newton's fascinated, slightly ironic lens: a way of life characterized by ease and elegance, a world dominated by appearance and superficiality, and a veritable living theatre in which he was both actor and privileged member of the audience.

CROSSING zeigt uns Jens Liebchen die Hauptstadt der bedingungslosen Mobilität so, wie sie von den meisten ihrer Bewohner bevorzugt wahrgenommen wird: durch die Fenster ihrer Autos. Aus dem fahrenden Auto heraus blickt Liebchen auf eine Stadt die die Gegensätze von Utopie und Dystopie in sich vereint. Dabei klingt L.A. Crossing selbst wie der Titel eines Films und so wird die Strasse zur Bühne und die Fotografie zu einer Art Standbild. In das betörende kalifornisches Licht getaucht erscheint die Stadt dabei als fiktiv und real zugleich. Eine Ikone der Fotokunst, Stephen Shores Bild »La Brea/Beverly« dient als theoretischer Aufhänger Liebchens Arbeit. Ausgehend vom »La Brea Matrix Projekt«, in dessen Zentrum besagtes Foto stand, hat Liebchen den Blick umgekehrt und blickt nun von der Strasse zurück auf die Stadt. Weder hält er an, wie Lee Friedlander (in »America by Car«), noch ordnet er sich einer strengen Systematik unter, wie Ed Ruscha (in »Every Building on the Sunset Strip«). Liebchen fährt und fährt und fährt. Aus der privilegierten und klimatisierten Perspektive des Fahrersitzes offenbaren sich dabei Licht- und Schattenseiten der Traumfabrik.
