O'Keefe's book takes up where another fine bibliography left off, Jeff Dykes' Billy the Kid: The Bibliography of a Legend, published in 1952 by the University of New Mexico Press in Albuquerque. My copy of Dykes' book formerly belonged to the noted book collector and bibliographer Al Lowman. It contains an inscription to Lowman in which Dykes proudly states that Texas folklorist and author J. Frank Dobie told him his Bibliography of a Legend was the only bibliography "that he ever read straight through." The same can easily be said of O'Keefe's Kid gathering - it's that good.
