Campbell's splendidly funny and touching work gives voice to people you don't hear much of in fiction: the working class of Manchester. A working class of Manchester in danger of being forgotten as the city's skyscrapers spread high and wide. A Manchester where Hacienda cliches turn into corporate nightmares.
Neil was a Technical Education teacher before he retired from teaching to become a gardener, whilst working as a teacher he started together with Robert (Bert) Kerr an adult Musical Instrument making course which ran to almost capacity for 20 years, making all manner of musical instruments. Having left teaching in 2011, and became a gardener, until the just before the first covid lockdown, when he heard the sad news that his former colleague Robert "Bert" Kerr had passed, and surprisingly later he was informed that he had inherited all his wood and violin making tools. As he was unable to leave his garden for that period, and had a shed full of materials and tools, Neil once again commenced his hobby of Violin making. This book showcases his violins made since then. They are all his own work, and the photos are also all his own work. The instruments he makes are wonderful creations he has made in his own time since retiring as a woodwork and musical instrument maker teacher in an Edinburgh school, each one has its roots in tradition, and diversifies from the norm to be something very special in its own right. Each instrument is unique and different to what would be normal, in fact so radically different that each is a work of art in its own right.
A Mancunian Kelman, Campbell's dark and darkly humorous tales capture the various voices of society's outsiders.
Worlding the Western takes the fiction of the Western United States as a focal point for a re-examination of the consequences of exceptionalism and closed borders in the Trump Era. At a time of bounded individualism, new nativism, climate emergency, and migration crises, author Neil Campbell argues that fiction offers opportunities to put the world back in ways that challenge the dark side of globalization and proposes worlding as a different and more open form of politics.
Employing the ideas of critics such as Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, and Jacques Ranciere, Neil Campbell examines the haunted inheritance of the Western in contemporary US culture. His book reveals how close examination of certain postwar films reconfigures our notions of region and nation, the Western, and indeed the West itself.

Using Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's concept of the rhizome, this book shows how the West (or west-ness) continually breaks away from a mainstream notion of American "rootedness" and renews and transforms itself in various cultural forms.
Short stories and flash fictions inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper. Works in the tradition of American greats of the short story like Raymond Carver, John Cheever, Andre Dubus, Richard Ford, but also embraces flash fiction. A multiplicity of short fiction styles.
With both economy and compassion, Neil Campbell creates lyrical visions of loss and confinement. Children, teenagers, parents, single men and women all feature in the unflinching depictions of ordinary people coping with the difficulties of everyday life.
An interdisciplinary introduction to American culture for those taking American studies courses or modules, this textbook introduces the full range and variety of American culture from race to religion, gender to youth, and business to foreign policy.
Sky hooks are like glass hammers and bubbles from spirit levels, things you get asked to find on your first day in a warehouse. In this case it is also a metaphor for dreams. Set in contemporary Manchester this story is about a lad who was on the books at City but got injured and never made it. It is a compelling coming of age tale.
Affective Critical Regionality offers a new approach to developing a sharper, more nuanced understanding of the relations between place, space, memory and affect. It builds on the author's extensive work on the American West, where he developed the idea of ';expanded critical regionalism' to underline the West as multiple, dynamic and relational; engaged in global / local processes, tensions between the rooted and the routed, and increasingly as relevant to debates around the politics of precarity and vulnerability. This book uses affective critical regionality to enable a re-valuing of the local as a powerful means to appreciate the everyday and the over-looked as vital elements within a more inclusive understanding of how we live. Exploring a variety of cultural materials including fiction, memoir, theory, poetry and film it demonstrates how this approach can deepen our understanding of, and simultaneously provoke new relations with, place. Moving beyond the US context through its use of international theoretical voices and texts, it will show how the concept is applicable to other cultural spheres.
An introductory survey of the important debates about key issues in the cultural history of the contemporary American West.
