That God has a personal name, which He revealed to Moses in the book of Exodus (3:14), is common knowledge among biblical scholars and theologians. That this personal name revealed by God is not Jehovah, is also common knowledge among biblical scholars and theologians. However, these facts are not really common knowledge among most lay readers of the Bible, especially in English language. Just as it was (and still is) among the Jews, most Christians and lay readers of the Bible do not know the actual name revealed by God Himself to Moses at the burning bush. This little booklet tries to deal with the metamorphosis of this divine name, tracing the historical circumstances of how the name Jehovah came about and why it should not be used as a replacement or synonym for the Tetragrammaton, YHWH (transcribed as Yahweh), the biblically revealed name of God.
