The importance of environmental protection and nature conservation policy has substantially increased within the European Union. Climate change, sustainable use of resources or the improvement of recycling markets are only a few key elements of current and future policies. The last decade may be characterised by population growth and economic development, implicating a high level of resources consumption and rapid growth of waste quantities. This chain now needs to be broken. Besides the screening of legislation, this book provides integrated assessment, strategies and guidelines for managing municipal waste with special focus on, but not limited to, Luxembourg. Having only a restricted means of intervention in the production and design of products, alternative ways of waste prevention are proposed. This book is therefore a useful resource for governments, communities, professionals and students of the environmental sector. Ecological waste management involves a multiplicity of actors throughout society. Beyond legal obligations, waste management is highly influenced by political views; acting sustainably is however a responsibility of each of us.
