In Restoration Ireland the law primarily served the interests of the English state and the Anglo-Protestant community and oppressed the majority Catholic population. Catholics and the law in Restoration Ireland examines how Catholics engaged with and experienced English common law primarily through the accounts of Catholic clerics and Gaelic poets. Analysing the letters of Oliver Plunkett and John Brenan, this book demonstrates the initial success and ultimate failure of their non-confrontational approach to legal and political processes. In contrast, the challenging stances of clerics like Nicholas French and John Lynch offer a new perspective on the wide variety of clerical engagement with the law. Drawing on the considerable corpus of primary sources, the book examines the often overlooked Irish-language literary material and considers the work of Dáibhí Ó Bruadair and his contemporaries to show how Gaelic Ireland deeply resented a hostile legal environment. It also explores Catholic landed families who recovered their estates in the 1663 Court of Claims and evidences the different approaches they adopted despite Protestant hostility, as well as illustrating how Catholic lawyers could survive, and even thrive, for a period. Catholics and the law in Restoration Ireland examines the many ways in which Irish Catholics experienced a legal system that proved fundamentally inimical to their interests.

HAFIZ IN THE PRESENT: Ghazals of Hafiz and those by his translator Paul Smith. There is really no equivalent to the ghazal (pronounced guz'el) in English poetry. As a matter of fact, the ghazal is a unique form and its origin has been argued about for many centuries. Some say that the first was composed by Adam, the first poet and Perfect Master. Many ghazals Paul Smith has composed were inspired by his translation of the Divan of Hafiz. Hafiz of Shiraz (1320-1392) was the greatest exponent of this ancient form. In this book Paul Smith used the first couplets from his translations of the ghazals of Hafiz. These are often about Meher Baba, his Spiritual Master. Hafiz's poems and those of his translator with notes are here published for the first time together. Introduction: Life & Times & Poetry of Hafiz; Life, Times & Poetry of Paul Smith; Life, Times & Work & Poetry of Meher Baba; The Ghazal in World Poetry, The Greatest Poets of the Ghazal; Glossary. Correct form has been achieved in the translations & all poems inspired by them. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format ("8.5 x 11") 444 pages. Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. DIVAN OF SADI... Ghazals, Ruba'is, Masnavis, Qit'as, Pand-Nama. (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Revised, Centered Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. Sadi of Shiraz (1210-1291), a contemporary of Rumi who influenced him, was a Perfect Master Poet who expressed himself in the ruba'i form as well as many hundreds of ghazals in his beautiful Divan that often also contained images from dervish dancing. Sadi was a great traveller who spent forty years on the road throughout the Middle-East, North Africa and India and many of the incidents he experienced he wrote down in his two most famous works when he finally returned to his beloved birth-place. Sadi's mystical love poetry, his ghazals, although almost unknown in the West, are loved by his fellow-countrymen almost as much as those of Hafiz whom he greatly influenced. Here for the first time in English they can be read in all their beauty and power and spirit. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these beautiful, mystical poems. All of the wonderful 603 ghazals and many of his ruba'is, some of his qit'as, masnavis, & his Pand-Nama (Book of Wisdom) have been translated in clear, modern, meaningful, correct-rhyming English. She was a court, dervish (Sufi) and ribald poet. She knew Nizami (she is said to have been buried in his mausoleum) and Omar Khayyam... and like Omar composed only in the ruba'i form and must be considered not only a master of that form but also to have helped to revolutionize it. RUBA'IYAT FOR THE SPIRITUAL MASTER MEHER BABA by Paul Smith. The ruba'i (quatrain in the west) is an ancient form of poetry of four lines in which usually the first, second and fourth lines rhyme and sometimes with the radif (refrain) after the rhyme words... all four rhyme. Each is a separate poem in itself. It should be eloquent, spontaneous and ingenious. Every major and most minor poet of Persia and Turkey and India composed at some times in the ruba'i form, Omar Khayyam being the most famous. The poems are mostly about human and divine love, separation and union, longing and bliss. Paul Smith has translated all the major Sufi and other poets of this form and has composed many of his own in English over the past 50 years dedicated to his spiritual Master Meher Baba since 1965. Here is a large selection of his work (486 poems) that are at once modern and reflecting all the great Sufi ruba'i poets of the past. The Introduction includes chapters on the author's life and work and on the life & works of Meher Baba and on this popular form of inspirational poetry. Selected Bibliography. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (8" x 10") Edition. Pages 536. Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. RUDAKI: SELECTED POEMS Translation, Introduction & Notes by Paul Smith Abu 'Abd Allah Ja'far ibn Muhammad Rudaki (858-941) the 'father of Persian Poetry' and possibly the ruba'i, was born in the village of Rudak near Samarkand. First a wandering 'dervish' poet/minstrel he later served at the court of the Samanids of Bokhara. Nasr ibn Ahmad summoned him to his court and he prospered there amassing great wealth. He had 200 slaves in his retinue... and 400 camels carried his belongings when he travelled. In 937 he fell out of favour at court (and was blinded at this time as some commentators suggest) after the death of the prime-minister who had supported him. His life ended in abject poverty, forgotten by the world at that time, perhaps the reason why so much of his vast output of 1,300,000 couplets, only 75 rubai's, ghazals, qasidas and qit'as survive (most are here translated, the most published). Rudaki's poetry is about the passage of time, old age, death, fortune's fickleness, importance of the matters of the heart, the need to be happy. Although he praised kings, nobles and heroes... his greatest love was knowledge and experience. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept in this modern translation, as well as the beauty and meaning of these beautiful poems. 144 pages.COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S VERSION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'."It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. KABIR: LIFE & POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Kabir (meaning 'great') was born near Varanasi (Banaras), India, in 1398 A.D. and died towards the end of the 15th Century. He was brought up by an elderly Muslim weaver-couple named Niru and Nirna, having been abandoned shortly after birth. He learnt the same trade as his new parents and used the imagery of weaving often in his poems. It is said that he had a number of Masters. One was a Sufi Master named Sheikh Taqqi. The most famous was Ramanand. Here are wonderful words of wisdom (sakhis/poems) from one of the wisest of the wise. Here are lines of love from a Master of Divine Love, and a human being who has lived as all human beings should live, with compassion, honesty and courage.
