Il s'agit d'une réécriture, le premier manuscrit ayant été détruit par Fanny Van de Grift, l'épouse de l'auteur, qui le considérait comme un « cahier plein de parfaites sottises ». L¿¿uvre raconte l'histoire d'un notaire, Gabriel John Utterson, qui enquête sur le lien étrange entre Edward Hyde et le docteur Henry Jekyll. Par ailleurs Robert Louis Stevenson a avoué avoir imaginé cette histoire après avoir fait un cauchemar.Le docteur Jekyll, un philanthrope obsédé par sa double personnalité, met au point une drogue pour séparer son bon côté de son mauvais. C'est ce dernier qui, nuit après nuit, prendra finalement le dessus et le transformera en monstrueux Mister Hyde. Les Nouvelles Mille et Une Nuits (titre original : New Arabian Nights) est un recueil de nouvelles écrites par Robert Louis Stevenson publié en 1882. Il s'agit d'une première livraison, la seconde étant Le Dynamiteur (titre original : More New Arabian Nights: The Dynamiter) qui intervint en 1885.Pourquoi ce titre? Parce que chaque nouvelle, articulée en épisodes, de ce recueil, apporte quelque chose à l'histoire globale et l'enrichit, et que le narrateur, tel Shéhérazade, incite le lecteur à lire la suite pour avoir les clés de l'histoire dont il vient de lui être fait lecture. Ne sont malheureusement présentées ici que deux nouvelles. Nous sommes à Londres, à la fin du XIXe siècle, nous cotoyons souvent les basfonds noyés dans le brouillard de cette société et l'atmosphère de ces nouvelles est caractéristique de ce lieu, de cette époque, comme pour d'autres écrivains, Arthur Conan Doyle en particulier.

Enfield witnessed Edward Hyde trampling a little girl. He had a menacing appearance. Hyde offered Enfield a check that was endorsed by a guy who was eventually identified as Dr. Henry Jekyll. A butler witnesses Hyde beating another of Utterson's patrons, Sir Danvers Carew, to death and leaving behind a broken cane.They discover a letter he sent to Utterson in which he confesses to having become the terrifying monster, Hyde. When Utterson and Mr. Poole break into the lab, they discover Hyde's body inside, where he appears to have committed himself.Lanyon deteriorated and died as a result of the trauma of witnessing his alter persona. One of the serum's ingredients eventually ran out, and subsequent versions made from fresh supplies were unsuccessful. Jekyll penned a detailed record of the events and locked himself in his laboratory intending to keep Hyde imprisoned. As Poole and Utterson broke down the door, Jekyll committed suicide by poison after realizing that he would remain as changed as Hyde.

Thus this novel tells the life of Dodd, from his days as a failed art student in Paris, to his business ventures with Jim Pinkerton in San Francisco, to the long complex case of the shipwrecked Flying Scud whose mystery dominates the second half of the book and reveals a horrible and bloody tragedy at sea.
