Picking up a month after book one in The Rising Shadows series, our main character sees for herself the aftermath of the Yellowstone eruption. With Death's kind freed from the pact, our characters set out into the world to pick up the pieces of the catastrophic event. Unfortunately things have a way of not going according to plan. While humans are trying to survive and get back on their feet they are suddenly exposed to the Shadow Walkers for the first time, and they aren't happy about it. With the country in shambles, will humanity extend an open arm to whatever aid they can get? Or will there be war?

Told from first person point of view, our female protagonist is accosted from the get-go by a figure she dubs Death. Looking like the Grim Reaper himself with skeletal limbs and pale skin, he pulls her from her comfortable life and into a terrifying journey. Since ancient times his kind have evolved in secret alongside humans due to a magical pact our ancestors made. As natural disaster is impending, he hopes that the main character will release his kind from the binding of this pact in exchange for their help in the coming days
