Nessie learns to fly a Cessna before she has her car licence. After studying aeronautical engineering at Sydney University, with her best friend, Corinne, Nessie joins the Air Force and meets her future husband Phillip, the son of an English duke, while she is doing her officer training at Point Cook, an outer suburb of Melbourne. Throughout her teens and early adult life, Nessie discovers that for her, love is not confined to one person, or one gender. Nessie achieves her goal of flying Caribou aircraft at Richmond Air Base, west of Sydney, but her pleasant life with Phillip which culminates with the birth of their son, Andy, is imperilled by the arrival from England of Henry Boyd, Phillip's childhood friend and Henry's stunning wife, Maggie.
Eighteen year old Freddy has always wanted to be a pilot like his World War Two pilot father. He enrols at the Point Cook Air Force College as a cadet and makes enemies of two bullies on his first day. He also makes friends, including flying instructor Alistair Churchill and his wife, Muriel. A star cadet, Freddy and his best friend, Redhead, learn about life and love as they study and train, then eventually marry before going on to satisfying careers in the Air Force.Then Freddy wakes up, severely injured in a strange hut with a man, who tells him that not only has he crashed a Vampire jet, but that he is accused by his long term enemy, Victor Green, of causing the crash deliberately. Later in hospital, Freddy is advised by his friend and mentor, Alistair Churchill, that he is to face a court-martial.When the past catches up, the future can be devastating, but can it be salvaged?
