Part of the Physics 2010 decadal survey project, this work assesses the state of the field in the United States, examines possible directions for the 21st century, offers a set of scientific challenges for American researchers to tackle, and makes recommendations for effective spending of federal funds.

The NRC carried out a study to characterize and discuss ways to optimize investments in materials research facility infrastructure with attention to midsize facilities. This report provides an assessment of the nature and importance of mid-sized facilities, their capabilities, challenges they face, investment, and optimizing their effectiveness.

Because of the importance of high-field magnets in scientific research, the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assess the state of and prospects of these magnets for high-field science and technology in the US. Focusing on scientific and technological challenges, this report presents the results of that assessment.
