After humanity's first era ended with only one nation remaining, the second era was one devoid of dreams. One where children were taken at birth and raised by the government to be conformed members of society. In this world there is a fighter who just wants to dream, a killer battling for freedom, and a seemingly unimportant man named Mr Henrys who doesn't at all know what he wants. Mr Henrys doesn't view himself as particularly well off, he has a small house and a simple office job. He doesn't see himself as smart either, not even a little. He doesn't even realise that there is something very wrong with the world he lives in. Most important of all though, Mr Henrys is completely unaware that the fate of the second era of humanity rests solely on him.In humanity's third era most have reverted back into tribal societies. Language has devolved, but life is simpler. There's a girl who just wants to explore and a boy forced into adulthood. The only technologically advanced society that remains lives hidden in a city built into the mountains to the south. Over time fighters have become leaders whilst killers now advocate for peace.Impacted by all of this is a boy named Toby who until today had never seen the outside world. He grew up underground where he couldn't even see his reflection. He only knows the words that the robots taught him, he's only ever seen what they've shown him. Everything changes for Toby when his only friend finds a way outside and vanishes. When Toby reluctantly follows, he finds a new world that he hasn't the words to describe. He will need to conquer his fears and create many new words if he has any hope of finding his friend.
Twenty-three hours and eleven minutes. That's how much time Charlie has before he's gone again. He wasn't even twenty-four when it started, when his life stopped being in the normal order. He wasn't just missing days. He was skipping back and forth, like someone ripped up a calendar not knowing how they would piece it back together again.Everyone looks back at who they were in the past as if they were a completely different person. Charlie is nothing like the man he used to be. He hated who he was and how he used to act. The problem is that his past self can hurt his future. Everything is in flux. Every new decision, every new action and every choice can not only change the future, but the past and present as well.
This book for teachers provides both practical, up-to-date guidance and a theoretical overview on a number of key topics in Latin teaching. Updated throughout, this new edition includes information about and analysis of recent Latin textbook publications and curriculum developments across the globe. Using a wealth of interviews, observations and pupil transcripts, Steven Hunt utilizes case-study evidence of excellent practice in teaching and learning from a wide variety of institutions: from outreach programmes, community schools and academies in the UK and USA. Offering practical advice on topics such as essay writing, teaching controversial topics including women, slavery, ethnicity and social hierarchy, making use of primary sources and using ICT to advance language skills, this book also engages with broader questions of approach and theory. These include a survey of the three main approaches to Latin teaching: grammar-translation, communicative and reading approaches; explanation of cognitive and social approaches to learning; and analysis of the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Moreover, traditional arguments about the value and purpose of learning Latin at school level are re-examined in the light of current educational thinking and government policy-making. This book is invaluable for trainees, newly qualified teachers and more experienced practitioners looking for practical ideas and strategies to motivate and engage learners of Latin.
