Six-week-old twins are kidnapped from a church during a Wednesday night service. The parents, not trusting the attitude and advice of the HPD officers, hire Mavis to rescue their babies. Despite cops ordering her to butt out, as usual, Mavis and her team search in the field and on social media for clues to the kids' location. Are they the victims of commercial human trafficking, or has someone stolen them to assuage a desire for a family? Just when Mavis has zeroed-in on the alleged perpetrator, the police arrest the P.I.'s innocent client, charging him with the suspect's murder. Now, with the twins still missing and possibly victims in a baby-selling ring, a killer on the loose, and the father in jail for murder, Mavis must once again prove to the authorities that she is up to the task. When an apparent trustworthy stranger comes forward to aid in the search, Mavis and her young assistant, Candy, accompany him into the night to where the children might be. Will they find the children and clear their client of murder, or will she and Candy become the next victims? A teenage girl from a well-to-do family disappears. Was she kidnapped or did she runaway? P.I. Mavis Davis' high school worker, Candy, brings in the girl's older brother to hire Mavis. Mavis doesn't work for kids, she says. Kids have no authority to hire anyone. BUT the young man throws money at Mavis and flees before she can throw it back. After Candy pleads and cajoles, Mavis agrees to spend a minimum amount of time on the case. Shortly after Mavis arrives to meet the parents-who are entertaining their friends at a garden/pool party-the father drops dead. The brother has disappeared as well! When the police arrive, they order Mavis to butt out, which always sets her teeth on edge. Although she's been retained and is determined to meet her obligations, she also fears that whoever has the kids may also have killed their father. As she does a deep dig into the family's history, Mavis discovers all is not as it appears. Some long unresolved matters beg for another look. Determined to get to the bottom of everything, Mavis realizes the best thing for the kids might not necessarily be to restore them to their mother. Because of her missteps, Mavis is arrested and charged as an accessory to kidnapping. Once sprung from jail, she must solve the case to clear her name. Even her cop boyfriend, Ben, can't help her this time-or rather, won't. If she can't resolve the case soon, Mavis is facing a life sentence! Jim Dorman, a laid off newspaperman in the Texas hill country, can't pay his child support. He's summoned to court for nonsupport and the first thing the judge does is read a Suggestion of Death into the record for a man who was supposed to appear that day. She tells the next man that his children would be better off if he were dead. When Jim steps up for his turn, the judge tells him to get a job or go to jail. At his next court appearance the judge reads another Suggestion of Death into the record, sparking Jim's curiosity. He soon discovers a number of men who have been cited for nonsupport died "accidental deaths." When an informant winds up murdered and stuffed into a trunk and strange mishaps befall Jim, he figures he'd better find out who's behind it all before he ends up as the next dead dad.
Five years ago, an ax-wielding killer hacked a cruise ship captain to death. The case has gone cold. After getting no response to her request that the case be reopened, a dead man's terminally ill sister hires Houston P. I. Mavis Davis to go down to Galveston Island to see if she can find the murderer. After learning all she can from her client, who had been estranged from her brother for quite a spell, Mavis wades right in, even though the cops have said, "Hands off the investigation. It's an open case." She tracks down the widow who agrees to see her. While at the widow's new home, Mavis meets an unpleasant man with whom it appears the widow has a relationship. The three adult children are a little more elusive, but Mavis finds them. Although she interviews them, everyone seems to be hiding something. With information learned from her contacts in Galveston, both old and new-one of whom is the wife of the widow's friend-Mavis learns not only of complications in the familial relationships, but of questionable interactions between the captain and unsavory characters in the community. Knowing time is of the essence, Mavis pushes on. She's threatened and warned away, but never gives up. She intuits there's possible nefarious activity on the part of several people, including, but not limited to, the widow and children. As she formulates a theory as to what happened with the captain, Mavis suspects some of her contacts may be in danger from the original perpetrator(s). Will Mavis be able unravel the mystery of the captain's murder before her client dies, or will the captain's terminally ill sister go to her grave heartbroken that her brother's death remains unsolved?
