This text is an attempt to synthesize what teachers know about how children learn, how they write, and what they write into a process of teaching children to write in elementary classrooms. It should serve as a starting place for developing theories of how to best teach writing.

An introduction to a wide range of specific evaluation strategies used by classroom teachers to arrive at grades for children's writing, giving explicit instructions for implementing them. Samples of student writing illustrate the techniques, and there is an appendix of additional student writing.
