Billy and his best friend, Tommy Little Bear, had planned two weeks of hunting in the wilds of the Mystic Mountains. An avalanche separates the boys and Billy finds himself lost and alone with only a few essentials and no wilderness experience. A small barred owl leads him to a remote hunting camp where they are joined by a young bear. The animals have much to teach and Billy has much to learn. His animal friends join him in facing off a cougar and fending off the wolves, but where are they when the blizzard of the century hits and the cabin becomes encased by snow? Billy runs out of wood and food and.... This delightful story begins when Billy is introduced to a First Nations family named Dubois, members of the Bear Clan. They make him one of their own and teach him many of the old ways. It ends as Billy recalls the words of Grandmother Dubois during a smudging ceremony. If you enjoy the wilderness, you'll enjoy the hunting and fishing techniques that Billy learns. You'll also have a better appreciation of our furry friends and feathered neighbors. At the turn of the 20th century Chinese workers came by the thousands seeking their fortunes on the "Gold Mountain" of North America with the intent of returning to a life of ease in China. A few, like Eng Wing, came to procure "tiles over one's head and soil under one's feet" in Canada. His first son, Peter, was raised during the turbulent years of two world wars, the depression of the 1920s and the drought of the 1930s. The Wing family worked and waited patiently through the years of the Chinese Exclusion Act, finally being recognized as "people" and citizens of Canada in 1947.Through decades of political and social prejudice, Eng Wing established his business and raised his children. His oldest son, Peter, became the first Chinese Mayor in North America. This is his story.
T.D. Roth grew up in the ranch country of southern Idaho. He has enjoyed a lifetime of adventure in the fields and mountains, lakes and streams of North America. He loves a good story and will assure you that his yarns must be true. After all, he made them up himself. He's hunted and fished in Idaho, Oregon, and California. After moving to Canada in 1972, his outdoor experience has included British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Newfoundland. From Grandpa with Love: The Adventures, Stories, and Yarns of a Lifelong Hunter and Fisherman was written for his grandsons and includes family photos throughout. The book is exactly what the title implies, so good luck in trying to sift fact from fiction in this delightful collection of memoir and yarn.
