Longarm tries a little moonlighting…As a personal favor, U.S. Deputy Marshal Custis Long arrives in Good Hope, Arizona, to help his boss's old friend, a former Texas Ranger named Don Carter. But Carter is a proud, obstinate son of a gun, not likely to accept help-though he's happy to give it, especially to the down-and-out. So Longarm poses as a drifter named Custis Short, who's willing to work for food, and Carter takes him in. Longarm quickly learns that the former Texas Ranger has a gold claim-and even though local big shot Kyle Burgen already owns half the county, he wants Carter's mine as well. When Burgen's raiders come in the night with guns and torches, Longarm's waiting to cut them down to size…
Longarm's in for the fight of his life… In his years as a lawman, Longarm's been pistol-whipped, punched-out, trampled, and shot more times than he can count-but his latest hangover may be the worst he's ever felt. Until he runs afoul of Anton Gardner… Since he's come to Fort Marion to extradite the prisoner Gardner-who robbed a military payroll and killed seven men-Longarm's been attacked by cops with clubs, taken a blow to the head from Gardner's lovely red-haired accomplice, been shot in the ribs, and tossed in jail. And the hardest blow of all: Gardner's escaped with his badge and is impersonating the lawman. One thing's for sure…Longarm is not down for the count.
It's a long way down…Judge Quinn and his lovely young wife have disappeared without a trace. The couple was last seen taking a boat ride on the Colorado River-and now three river guides have been found with their throats slit. To get to the bottom of the mystery, Longarm needs to get to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. With a Dutch beauty named Heidi at his side, U.S. Deputy Marshal Custis Long fights off back-shooting bushwhackers just to reach the rim of the Canyon. Once he's down on the river, he discovers even worse trouble around the bend. Longarm will need to keep his head above water as he battles ruthless river rats-or he may find himself up the creek without a paddle…
Longarm goes medieval on a madman…Shooting someone in the back is the coward's way. And Deputy U.S. Marshal Custis Long is determined to track down the coward who put three slugs into the back of Moses Arthur before the old codger could impart urgent information to the lawman. All Longarm knows is the info has something to do with Arthur's granddaughter. With no more than a name to follow, Longarm sets out to find Arthur's kin and get to the bottom of the old man's murder. And when the trail leads to an actual castle out in the desert, Longarm realizes it's no mirage-especially when he's taken prisoner. Custis Long may not be a knight in shining armor, but when there are beautiful maidens to be rescued, he's sure as shooting a savior with a six-gun.
