Representative democracy endured in Europe because its political leaders' deviousness and self-advancement were balanced by altruism, fortitude and civic virtue. However, in this century, the reputation and calibre of politicians has slumped in country after country, as fads, image, process, triviality and spin are promoted over experience, prudence and long-term outcomes. National leadership roles are increasingly filled by inexperienced careerists, who are disconnected from the people on whose behalf they are supposed to rule. How can Europe remain mostly free and adequately governed, if this leadership famine drags on?Reviewed by Jim Sillars in Think Scotland, 7 July 2023>Tom Gallagher has written a superb book on European politics. I cannot over-state its value given the lessons to be learnt from it. HOW WAS it possible for the dogs of war to be let loose in Europe, thirty-one years after the struggle between the West and the Soviet Union came to a conclusion, and seemed to begin a long term era of peace? Tom Gallagher's book... provides a good number of the answers. We are witnessing the consequences of the political ascendancy of a cosmopolitan professional political elite, skilled in spin and immersed in managerialism, but woefully short on statesmanship. This is a book both for people with a general interest in politics, and for those who practice the art, for whom there are lessons to be learnt, about recognising the clash between the legitimate interests of nation states and international institutions'.Reviewed by Dom Wightman in Country Squire, July 2023>Mr Gallagher has written an excellent book on European politics, on the backs of the careers of twenty politicians of different hues and flaws. After reading it, one wonders if the political parties of today should not fast revise their recruitment policies.Let's hope that the lessons to be learnt from this book are taken on board and that they do not make for mere footnotes to a period of peace before another large-scale European war. This book is well worth buying and sticking under the noses of your children or grandchildren, even your MP if you think they're tough enough to handle its hard truths.

  • - The End of Communism, the Failure of Democratic Reform, and the Theft of a Nation
    av Tom Gallagher
    319 - 1 434,-

Since the 1989 fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, Romania, arguably the most regimented of states in the Soviet bloc, has struggled with the transition from totalitarian state to democratic nation. In this insightful examination of modern Romania, Tom Gallagher provides an overview of Romania's unique political and social history, focusing on both its national identity as well as the legacy of Soviet rule. Gallagher provides an in-depth look at Romania since 1989, focusing on the government's attempts at economic reform, engagement with democracy, problems with corruption among the ruling elite, as well as the weakness of civil society and the resilience of implacable expressions of nationalism. Ultimately, Gallagher argues that thus far democracy has essentially failed in Romania. In fact, he warns that Romania is on its way to becoming one of the most unequal states in Europe and quite possibly a future trouble-spot unless efforts to resume much-needed reforms are undertaken.

  • - Scotland Under Nationalism
    av Tom Gallagher
    626,-

Alex Salmond's Scottish National Party wants Scotland to cease being the invisible country of Europe and to embrace independence. This book argues that if the British Union is demolished, change will remain elusive and Scotland will continue to be run by the close-knit administrative, commercial and religious elites who have dominated the country.

  • - How the weak vanquished the strong
    av Tom Gallagher
    281 - 1 102,-

Romania's predatory rulers, the heirs of the sinister communist dictator Ceauescu, have inflicted a humiliating defeat on the European Union. This book discusses policy failures in the areas of justice, administrative and agricultural reform and shows how Romania moved backwards politically during the years of negotiations.

  • - From Tyranny to Tragedy
    av Tom Gallagher

Analyses the crisis faced by the Balkan states at the end of the Cold War, the turbulent events that followed and Western policy towards the region.

  • - From the Ottomans to Milosevic
    av Tom Gallagher
    858,-

Examining Balkan politics, from the emergence of nationalism to the retreat of Communist power in 1989, this book systematically argues that many of the region's problems are external in origin. It also examines the origins of Western prejudices towards the Balkans, tracing the damaging effects of policies based on Western lethargy and cynicism.
