Bilingual Edition The tremendous growth of Latin American cities in the last few years has continued to aggravate a situation that has its roots in both the Spanish and Indian cultures. The Latin American, even more than the North American of the last century, has viewed the city as his one and only hope for a future. This has led to a concentration of 30% or more of the population of any given country being packed together in and around the largest city, usually the capital. If we are going to win Latin America for Christ, then we need to develop some methods and systems whereby we can reach out to these ever-expanding cities and touch the people where they live. The pages that follow are a compilation of ideas and dreams that, seared with the hot coals of reality, have been growing and developing in my heart over the past few years. I would like to express my appreciation to Don Kammerdiener for his suggestions which focused my attention on this need. I would also be remised if I did not mention all the people with whom I have worked and who participated in the development of this project. These are my wife, my missionary co-laborers, and my fellow church members who dared to dream with me and see those dreams become a reality. I believe this method is not limited to this one location but could and should be used in every urban setting in Latin America, if not the world.

This is the story of Phoebe's trip to Paraguay where her mother was born as told by her grandfather.

A rash of ministry professionals, particularly young ministers, who took their own life prompted me to write this book at this time. It would seem that the clouds of depression had so overwhelmed them they did not see any solution but removing themselves from the equation. The letter at the end reflects on my struggle. Under other circumstances, I might have been one of those statistics. In their most difficult moments, a profession designed to help others was not there to help them or me through the turmoil. I pray that books like this one will stem the tide of this terrible epidemic.The title, "If I Had Only..." is the beginning of many sentences. We wish that we had known then what we know now. Twenty-twenty hindsight is terrific, but it would have been helpful to have known those things beforehand.The purpose of the book is to help get ahead of the "If I Had Only...'s" you will face traveling this leadership path. Some things you have already encountered - maybe this validates the need for this book. You may never have to deal with others, but read them anyway - you never know. But perhaps there is one thing that will help you right now - and many more will help you in years to come.Reflecting on my time as Executive Director of a sizeable Association, I wish that someone had shared some of the things I have included in this book. At first, I might not have been open to the help, but it is what I needed, and with time I would have appreciated it.Therefore, you might not think you need to hear the things I share in this book. But since you picked up the book, you are probably dealing with some issues, which may be eating your lunch. I do not promise that what I share will solve your problems. But the ideas in this book may prompt you to discover what works in your particular situation. And that will be the best solution of all.

This is the story of my years in Paraguay. As I look back on my life, I realize that it has been a rather interesting one. Therefore, I thought I would tell my story. In this day and age, with print on demand and eBooks, anyone can become a published author. So why not me? It only takes time, and I seem to have a lot of it disposable now that I'm retired. There are a couple of caveats I need to add here at the beginning. One, these are my memories and, as such, may not be entirely reliable. As with most people, I have a tendency to remember some things and forget others. I, also, don't necessarily remember it the way it really was, but the way, well, I remember it. I have asked some of those "who were there" to read over what I have written to confirm my memories, but, of course, they also remember what they remember. So, there is no way of really knowing exactly what happened in each case. I have done the best I can. Regardless of the missing details, these are stories and they made for an interesting life. Two, in some cases I am re-telling stories I was told. Again, these depend on my memories but also on the storyteller's memories. I have tried to research the details as best I can to make sure the story, I am telling lines up with the historical information available referencing the moment around my story. Enjoy the stories. Know that they may or may not have happened exactly as portrayed but nevertheless are interesting and for the most part entertaining.
