The Gladstone Diaries Volume 8: July 1871-December 1874
This 11th volume of the Gladstone Diaries deals with the period from July 1883 to December 1886. Together with the 10th volume it covers his second and third administrations, and the series of crises that occurred, such as the Land League Campaign and Phoenix Park murders.
H.C.G. Matthew's edition of Gladstone's diaries, correspondence and papers culminates in this volume which contains indexes to the entire edition. The "Index of Persons", "Subject Index", and "Index of Gladstone's Reading" form a reference tool and ancillary volume to the main work.
The last two volumes, 12 and 13, of Gladstone's diaries cover the years 1887-1896, and reveal a remarkably vigorous octogenarian. Gladstone was 84 when he stepped down as Prime Minister for the last time, but his life-style made few concessions to his age.
