In den nächsten 36 Jahren wurde die Sammlung immer wieder überarbeitet und erheblich erweitert (von anfangs zwölf auf fast 400 unterschiedlich lange Gedichte, oft selber Gedichtzyklen, in der neunten Auflage 1892). Walt Whitman (1819-1892) war ein US-amerikanischer Dichter. Er gilt als einer der Begründer der modernen amerikanischen Dichtung und daher als einer der einflussreichsten amerikanischen Lyriker des 19. Jahrhunderts, dessen Werk auch in der folgenden Zeit von großer literarischer Bedeutung ist. Sein berühmtestes Werk ist sein Lebenswerk Leaves of Grass (Grashalme).
