Shostakovich's 24 Preludes (Op. 34) is a selection of short pieces for solo piano written in 1933. They are arranged following the circle of fifths, with one prelude in each major and minor key.
Written while the composer was employed at the Court at Cöthen and dedicated to Christan Ludwig of Brandenburg, Bach's six Brandenburg Concertos are staples of the Baroque orchestral repertoire. The sixth concerto stands out with its unique instrumentation - two violas, two violas da gamba, violoncello, and double bass with cembalo continuo. With no violins, the violas take centre stage. Edited by prominent violist and arranger Watson Forbes, this edition keeps the two viola parts exactly as they appear in the score, while the other orchestral parts have been freely arranged for piano accompaniment. So far as the two solo viola parts are concerned, this is a performing edition which can be played either with the piano reduction or with the full instrumentation.

Can you hear me? is written for eight-part a cappella choir and sets a new text by Peter Thomson that asks simple but fundamental questions about the need for human contact. First performed by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall, London in December 2021, it captures one of the problems the world faced with the Covid-19 lockdown, and looks forward to new beginnings. Duration is 4.5 minutes.
The Sleeping Soul is an atmospheric five-minute piece for SATB choir with organ, at times evoking the mystery of the text and at other moments expressing joy contained in it. It was composed for the Bath Abbey Music Society in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Abbey Girls Choir in 2017. The work sets a text by the Christian medieval mystic St Mechthild of Magdeburg (c.1207-c.1297).
The Yiddish folk song Vos dergeystu mir di yorn is a humorous dispute between a pair of lovers who complain bitterly about the interference of various relatives in their relationship. In this arrangement, which lasts five minutes, Fredo Jung has set the dialogue with much harmonic finesse for two solo voices, SATB and piano. The movement continuously surprises with new twists, timbres, overtones and melodies and is a wonderfully artistic realization of all the "bickering".Yiddish Choral SeriesSeries Editors: Samuel Seifert and Ludwig BöhmeYiddish folk songs explore the complete range of human emotions, powerfully expressing all that the Jewish people have loved, embraced and endured. (Who has such a son?) is a 3-minute, lively, joyful folk song of Eastern Jewish origin. Full of pride, the mother sings a hymn of gratitude for her own child, who is, of course, the best child of all! Polina Shepherd's arrangement for solo voice, SATB and piano adds authentic Yiddish ornamentation to the characteristic simple song melody. This creates a kind of onomatopoeia in the solo and choral parts; a sort of notated improvisation that should be felt with metrical freedom. Even for choral singers unfamiliar with Klezmer, this arrangement gives the opportunity to become wonderfully engaged with the style and---like the mother with her 'Yingele'---will be richly rewarded.
Veyn nisht for SATB a cappella is a 6-minute setting based on the melancholic lullaby Kleyner yosem (Little Orphan) by the legendary Polish-Jewish songwriter Mordechaj Gebirtig (1877-1942). In his interpretation of the Yiddish song, Bernd Franke uses a broad tonal language including aleatoric and scenic elements. The piece begins with a haunting whisper, which gradually grows into a touching four- to eight-part choral sound. Only at the end does the original melody return, integrated into a four-part polyphonic choral movement.Yiddish Choral SeriesSeries Editors: Samuel Seifert and Ludwig BöhmeYiddish folk songs explore the complete range of human emotions, powerfully expressing all that the Jewish people have loved, embraced and endured. Rozhinkes mit mandlen by Abraham Goldfaden is one of the most famous Yiddish lullabies. It is about a mother's longing for a better future for her child. 'Rozhinkes' (raisins) and 'Mandlen' (almonds) are symbolic of well-being and prosperity. In this choral version by Ludwig Böhme for solo voice, SATB and piano, and which lasts 3.5 minutes, the 'feast' is presented in a through-composed arrangement with a richly-textured piano accompaniment. Constantly flowing waves of quavers, inspired by the swaying 'Aylyulyu', and the added affectionate motif 'Yidele shlof' make the romanticism of the song sound almost symphonic.Yiddish Choral SeriesSeries Editors: Samuel Seifert and Ludwig BöhmeYiddish folk songs explore the complete range of human emotions, powerfully expressing all that the Jewish people have loved, embraced and endured. The Yiddish folk song Dzhankoye reflects the pride of Jewish peasants who sing of a Jewish kolkhoz (collective farm) on the Crimean peninsula. Juan M.V. Garcia's arrangement (duration: 2 minutes) leaves the performers plenty of scope for their own creativity: the melody and the choral 'background' can be performed in a variety of ways and enriched by clapping and other effects.Yiddish Choral SeriesSeries Editors: Samuel Seifert and Ludwig BöhmeYiddish folk songs explore the complete range of human emotions, powerfully expressing all that the Jewish people have loved, embraced and endured. A diptych by poet Mary Jo Salter, the text of Fred Hersch's Two Haiku compares the fleeting span of a life to the turning of the seasons. In addition to painting the words of these brief stanzas with rich chromatic harmonies, Hersch's six-minute score calls upon the singers to illustrate the themes of the haiku with the sounds of whistled birdsong and unvoiced breaths.Dedicated to the memory of musician and educator Steve Zegree, this eight-part choral setting was commissioned for vocal octet Roomful of Teeth by Ryan McNaughton and premiered at the 2017 Ecstatic Music Festival. Composed for Roomful of Teeth Text by Mary Jo Salter Uses whistling and audible breathing Challenging 8-part mixed choral piece Driven by rich chromatic harmonies
The Errollyn Wallen Songbook showcases 12 of the most celebrated songs by a composer who has been called the 'renaissance woman of contemporary British music' (The Observer). These songs span the widest range of emotions - from the exuberance of What's up Doc? to the essential truths of Guru and the earth-shattering Daedalus. The songs in this book appeal to all singers, whether pop, jazz or classically trained. Stripped to the essentials - voice and piano - these songs are a treasure chest for anyone interested in the art of song. 'All these songs were written from my heart and in a state of grace. At last they have made the journey from my battered manuscript sketchbook where they were often feverishly scribbled down. I am very pleased to be able to share them in this book. Improvisation is an important characteristic of my performances. In some songs in this book I have retained elements of my own style of improvisation, particularly in the piano solos and in some vocal lines. In others I have given a bare skeleton, designed to act as a springboard for flights of fancy. I encourage the performer, whether from a pop, classical, folk or jazz background, to feel free to imbue their performances of this music with their own creative spirit.' Errollyn Wallen'...a genuine creative figure - a real composer - someone who is not afraid to take risks in her music - I don't know of any other composer around today with anything like the same outlook as Wallen...'
