Esta investigación se centra en los bajos resultados que obtienen los estudiantes del programa de Administración de Empresas de la Universidad de Sucre en la competencia matemática de resolución de problemas. Su objetivo general es evaluar la incidencia del uso de estrategias metacognitivas en dicha competencia. La metodología fue de tipo mixta, integrando elementos cuantitativos y cualitativos. En la parte cuantitativa se emplea un diseño cuasiexperimental, en el cual se interviene el grupo experimental y se comparan sus resultados de las medidas del pretest y postest con el grupo de control; los datos son tomados a través de un cuestionario compuesto por 14 preguntas extraídas de las pruebas SABER, las cuales comprenden 3 indicadores (diseña, ejecuta y resuelve) y 3 niveles de complejidad (I, II y III). Se toman elementos del enfoque cualitativo: entrevista semiestructurada y cuestionario abierto con los cuales se indaga sobre las estrategias metacognitivas empleadas cuando resuelven situaciones problema. Los resultados muestran que el grupo experimental obtiene mejores puntajes, sin embargo, para el indicador ejecuta y niveles de dificultad II y III este incremento no es estadísticamente significativo, como si sucede con los indicadores Diseña y Resuelve y nivel de dificultad I. Estos resultados corroboran que las estrategias metacognitivas mejoran el desempeño en la competencia de resolución de problemas, ya que propicia el desarrollo de habilidades orientadas a la planeación, control y evaluación de las estrategias.
