The wild land of Susquehanna County, traversed but not inhabited by the Lenape tribe, was first settled after the Revolutionary War, mostly by veterans in search of affordable land and willing to pioneer. Their families built homes, churches, and businesses and formed thriving agricultural communities, taking advantage of natural resources like timber and bluestone. Rolling hills, clear lakes, and mountain streams form a scenic and peaceful backdrop, attractive to visitors. From the mountaintops, small communities can be seen in the valleys, their white church spires rising above the trees. Influenced by emigrants from New England, the larger towns replicate the neat white houses and shady tree-lined streets of the Northeast.
Originally settled by Dutch farmers in the 1600s, the borough of Maywood experienced population and industrial growth in the late 1800s with the coming of the railroad. New Jersey Midland Railway, predecessor to the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad, arrived in 1872, a time when Maywood consisted mainly of farmland. Maywood was incorporated in 1894, when the railroad expanded into the Pennsylvania coalfields. The railroad provided the means for transportation of people, goods, and services, and Maywood grew measurably with it into the 20th century. Today the borough has developed into a suburb of such iconic cities as New York City, Paterson, Passaic, and Hackensack, while still retaining its character and charm.
When Groton was first settled in 1655, clashes with Native Americans were frequent and brutal. When most buildings were burned during a March 1676 assault, Groton was abandoned for safer ground. With true determination, settlers returned two years later to rebuild their village. From that day forward, Groton continued to grow in population, industry, and community engagement. In 1869, resident George S. Boutwell served as secretary of the treasury under Pres. Ulysses S. Grant and hosted a reception for the president when he visited Groton. During the town's industrial development in the last half of the 19th century, the Groton Leatherboard Company was established along the banks of the Squannacook River in West Groton. Lawrence Academy and Groton School have educated students since the 18th and 19th centuries, respectively. Continuing Groton's tradition of offering quality education, the Lowthorpe School was founded in 1901 as the first landscape architecture school devoted to training only women. Despite all the changes that invariably altered the landscape and the infrastructure, Groton remains, in a sense, the same as it began: a town striving for self-sufficiency and success but also dedicated to shaping the world around it.
Upper Saucon Township was established in 1753. Often called "the Crossroads" because of its connections to the areas around it, the tracks of the North Pennsylvania Railroad awakened the small town of Center Valley in 1856. From there, the Liberty Bell trolley line was added, making transportation of goods and people even easier within the township. Milk trolleys ran daily, and mills lined the creeks running through the predominantly agricultural township. As the connections grew, so did the needs of one of Upper Saucon Township's towns: Coopersburg. With the needs of a burgeoning town, Coopersburg petitioned to become a distinct borough in 1879. Coopersburg brought attention to the area with its industries and annual cattle sale. It was dubbed "the town of possibilities" for all it had to offer.
Thacher Island was named for Anthony Thacher who, in 1635, lost his four children and other family members in a shipwreck during the most severe storm to ever hit the Massachusetts coast. Only Anthony and his wife Elizabeth survived. The lighthouses have played an important role in several wars, including the Revolutionary War and World Wars I and II, when the navy established a radio compass station to protect the coast from enemy submarines. A ship bearing a U.S. president almost wrecked on Thacher Island, and the island was used as a witness protection site for a Mafia criminal. Twin Lights of Thacher Island, Cape Ann captures the history, adventures, and intimate stories from over 200 years of lighthouse keepers living on the island, including how the two towers were built and how scientific discoveries were applied to improve the lights over the years.
The great wave of European immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought more than four million Italians to America. It was one of the greatest mass emigrations in world history, and many settled in Staten Island. Following the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964, the island experienced another great influx of Italian immigrants, this time from the other boroughs of New York City. This new wave was responsible for doubling the island population by the year 2000. Italian Americans are evident in every avocation and in each corner of Staten Island society, with achievers in education, business, government, medicine, and sports and entertainment. Italian Staten Island chronicles the traditions, culture, and heritage of Italian Americans through more than 200 photographs.
According to local lore, Auburn's name comes from "Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain," a line from Oliver Goldsmith's poem, "The Deserted Village." The first settlers were drawn to the Auburn area by the remarkable falls, lakes, and streams, which provided power for early shoe and textile manufacturers as well as opportunities for recreation. Visitors were also attracted by the tremendous natural resources of "Sweet Auburn" and tourism boomed in the nineteenth century, with people "from away" flocking to the area to enjoy cruises on Lake Auburn and to partake of spring waters and tonics. As Auburn grew and changed, photographers began to preserve these developments on film. For the past 130 years, they have recorded the daily lives of the people of Auburn: their workplaces, schools, and houses; their modes of dress and moments of leisure; and the celebrations and disasters that have brought the people of Auburn together.
When Dr. Donald Guthrie arrived in Sayre in 1910, it was home to the third-largest railroad repair shop in the world. A small hospital, the first in the region, had opened 25 years earlier to care for those injured in this dangerous work. Fresh from surgical training at the Mayo Clinic, Guthrie brought with him a vision and the energy and charisma to make his dream a reality. He started Guthrie Clinic, one of the oldest multispecialty group practices in the nation, and established Robert Packer Hospital as the region's premier destination for hospital care. Guthrie's reputation as a surgeon grew, and the hospital cared for leaders of business, government, and society alongside the townspeople. Through two world wars, the Great Depression, and a devastating fire-in which no lives were lost-nothing slowed Guthrie's vision, and it has become a lasting legacy. More than 200 photographs tell the remarkable story of the transformation of a small rural hospital into an award-winning integrated health care system.
Pittsburgh is the birthplace of radio, the location of many of radio's first and most influential stations and broadcast personalities, and a key market for the development of new formats. Pittsburghers' reaction to the music they heard on the radio helped to break records and create stars. Radio provided an unprecedented audience for live performances by local artists. After the big band era, radio gave voice to pop, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues. Pittsburgh's Golden Age of Radio celebrates the city's radio history, deejays, contests, concerts, public service, and promotions from radio's beginnings in the 1920s through the late 1970s, when listening on FM exceeded that on AM for the first time.
Cornelius Vanderbilt, Aaron Burr, Faber Pencils, the atomic bomb, Paul Zindel, and David Johansen all have one thing in common: Port Richmond. Many Staten Islanders flocked to Richmond Avenue, known as the Fifth Avenue of Staten Island, to shop at Garber Brothers or at Tirone's Shoes or enjoy an ice-cream soda at Stechman's. The Ritz, Palace, and Empire Theaters hosted vaudeville shows, films, rock concerts, and roller-skating. More than a dozen places of worship have been founded in Port Richmond since the late 1600s, mirroring the community's ethnic diversity. Port Richmond traces the unique contributions of each new wave of immigrants to the neighborhood.
William Bond became the first Warrensburg settler, when he arrived in the Echo Lake area, in 1787. Shortly thereafter, Warrensburg became known as "the Bridge" because it was the location of the only bridge in the area that crossed the Schroon River. In February 1813, the town of Warrensburg was formed from part of Thurman. By the mid-1800s, A. C. Emerson and B. P. Burhans had moved to Warrensburg and begun to harness the waterpower of the Schroon River and utilize the nearby timber resource. The Emerson sawmill and Burhans's tannery and gristmill provided employment and capital to support a growing and thriving town. Other industries, such as a woolen mill and pants factory, sash and blind factory, shirt factory, and shoe peg factory, soon followed. With the dawn of the 20th century, improved transportation in the form of railroads and the automobile began bringing more people to Warren County. This trend continues today as numerous visitors summer in the Adirondacks to enjoy the clean air and water of the north country.
Teterboro Airport has been in continuous use since 1916 and was once the busiest airport in the country. In 1925, the Fokker Company opened an American subsidiary, the Atlantic Aircraft Corporation, and Teterboro-built Fokker trimotors dominated the industry for a decade. In the 1920s and 1930s, record-setting flights became a national obsession, and many of the flights originated or terminated at Teterboro Airport. In 1939, the Goodyear blimp Mayflower made daily sightseeing flights over the New York City world's fair. In 1952, television personality Arthur Godfrey buzzed the control tower while taking off in his DC-3. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey purchased the airport in 1949 and made major investments in airport infrastructure. Today the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum is located at the airport.
In 1933, the town of Norvelt became the fourth of 99 planned subsistence homestead communities subsidized by the federal government as part of the National Industrial Recovery Act for dislocated miners and industrial workers. The American Field Service Committee was recruited to implement and build the subsistence project and established a work camp in the summer of 1934. More than 1,850 people applied for 250 lots, and the first 1,200 homesteaders helped build their own homes on a lease-to-purchase agreement. Homes were equipped with a grape arbor, 3.4 acres of land, and chicken coops. Cooperatively, homesteaders established community garden plots and raised livestock, hogs, and chickens. A format of cultural, political, and religious expression was provided to the residents, and through vintage photographs Norvelt: A New Deal Subsistence Homestead celebrates the remarkable life transformation the homesteaders were able to experience during the town's formative years.
Delaware Township is a strategically situated farming community, lying halfway between New York City and Philadelphia. The township has a rich history, going back to early Lenni-Lenape settlements. The iconic symbol of the township is the last, and only, covered bridge in New Jersey. Delaware Township uniquely maintains many of the vestiges of its farming heritage, with its picturesque country roads, ancient fields, and a feed store still in operation. Many historic structures still stand, including the town hall, which is the site of an old tavern, and original mill buildings. In the past, township life was focused on a number of villages, each with its own local schools, churches, and stores. The vintage images in Delaware Township have been graciously shared by a number of township residents.
When land started to run out in central Massachusetts, the state's National Guard units began to search for sufficient space on which to hold their annual training. They found what they needed on Cape Cod. This land would become Camp Edwards and later the Massachusetts Military Reservation and the Otis Air National Guard Base. When World War II loomed, the reservation became a significant training area for units heading overseas, a proving ground for amphibious operations landing vehicles and equipment, and a major duty station in the lives of thousands of America's military men and women.
Saco Revisited reveals an unprecedented glimpse into Saco's history. From the stately homes of early entrepreneurs to tragic fires and floods and the rise and decline of Saco's powerful textile mills, many photographs are presented publicly for the first time.
The industrial community of Donora was founded in 1901 on a bend of the Monongahela River, 30 miles south of Pittsburgh. The founding of Donora was the result of social, political, and economic interaction among elite and powerful capitalists. Andrew and Richard Mellon partnered with William H. Donner and Henry C. Frick to create the Union Improvement Company and build a mill, developing the surrounding municipality. In less than a year, the population of Donora quickly boomed from an original 12 residents to more than 4,000 inhabitants. The opportunity for employment drew people from all over the United States and Europe, generating a diverse community. Regardless of differences, the races, religions, and ethnic groups that settled in Donora shared a common value system based on education, hard work, and devotion to faith and family.
In 1881, a narrow-gauge railroad was built in southwestern New York, from Attica to Arcade. It was later rebuilt to standard gauge to connect with what became the Pennsylvania Railroad. Concerned that the line would be abandoned, local farmers, merchants, and others raised money to purchase the railroad and formed the Arcade and Attica Railroad. Through vintage photographs, Arcade and Attica Railroad highlights the history of a railroad that, faced with declining revenues, launched steam-powered passenger service in 1962. With a dedicated management team that has taken the time and effort to face obstacles, the pride of loyal employees, and a supportive community, the railroad has endured a variety of herculean challenges to continue passenger and freight service in Wyoming County, New York.
