Martin Latigue, drafted in the Army in November 1963, was proud to serve his country in Vietnam. Like so many other young men of his generation, he did so with honor. In this memoir, he looks back at growing up in small-town America only to end up fighting a war thousands of miles away. While in the Army, he overcame his prejudices and learned to love his Army brothers-all of them. He watched many of them die at the Battle of Ia Drang, which was the first major engagement between regular U.S. and North Vietnamese troops. Even though the author had always prayed, he had a hard time doing so while in combat. The words did not come easily to his mind. All he could think about was that he would die in battle. He thanked God for the hard training he received. He asked God to forgive him of his sins. His prayers were short-and he called out the name of Jesus over and over.

Poet Bonnie Weiss presents a collection of stories and poems filled with vivid memories, halfway between verse and prose. Her words are honest, sensitive, and profound but also sometimes humorous, sometimes deep. The style is lyrical and deceptively simple as she presents the incredible power of love and the pain of loss. In this evocative and entertaining collection, Weiss uses colorful images and description. See and hear the bees, hummingbirds, and ocean. Yet it goes beyond the visceral to the emotional in poems like "My Shrine to You: " I love you; you gave me your love. And now a whole year without you, a lifetime without you, without the glory of you. Autumn has passed. Winter is here. Its message lies deep within bare trees, their rich sap husbanding energy. I am pregnant with the sap of winter. I gaze at the snow blossoms on the pear tree And wonder, "Will spring arrive for me?" Empathize with the pain but find beauty and joy, too, as you walk the poet's path to truth and enlightenment.
At five o'clock, horses Bonnie and Carlos are ready for dinner, but Bonnie wants something other than hay. Carlos knows a place up in the Blue Ridge where they can find some more interesting snacks. It's dangerous up in the mountains, so they stay close together to keep each other safe, all while witnessing beautiful, wild things. Two brave horses faced the unknown and worked together to bring back treats for their family to eat, and now Bonnie and Carlos now have stories to tell-and recipes to share!
