A unique collection of essays that provides theoretical basis for the value of using creative teaching assignments in Medieval and Renaissance history and literature classes and offers a whole toolbox of practical suggestions that allow students to connect course material to their own experiences and help them care more about the material they are seeking to master. First and foremost for teachers of the pre-modern to adapt and use in college courses of all levels, many of the assignments are also adaptable for a high school classroom. In addition, this volume reaches into broader questions of pedagogical methodology, philosophy, and theory. The contributors reflect on the value and necessity of creative teaching and learning, on using non-traditional classroom activities to tether the students to the material in a more intimate, deeper conceived, and often transformative engagement.
Celebrated Argentine author Jorge Luís Borges found Shakespeare's work so compelling that he not only fictively imagined the life of the playwright in two short stories, but also fashioned other stories and poems into adaptations of or meditations on Shakespeare's plays, wrote essays about Shakespeare, and discussed him frequently in interviews, university lectures, and public talks. The 15 original essays in this volume represent only a few of the paths that Glyn Burgess's research career has taken: lays, by Marie de France and unknown authors; manuscript collections of lays and fabliaux; episodic narratives, from ancestral/outlaw romance and Norman vernacular historiography; transformations of the Brendan legend; and authorial voice in religious texts, including Wace's. The diversity of content and approaches has created a volume which will serve both as a fitting tribute to Burgess's continuing influence and expertise, as well as a contribution to the growing theoretical and applied work in the area of the short narrative, which the authors extend to a very broad range of works, from fabliau to hagiography, from history to myth. This breadth of interest, within a close and analytical focus on short narrative, make this an important, indeed unique, collection.
Edward Poeton's The Winnowing of White Witchcraft was written in the 1630s and has never been printed. Poeton, a physician, was one of few non-clergymen to write about magic during the early modern period, and the treatise offers new insights into the problem of popular errors concerning the nature of witchcraft. As well as advancing a number of standard and not-so-standard arguments for the sinfulness of white witches, the treatise offers fascinating insight into Poeton's practice as a physician and his own youthful dalliance with magic. It is thus a significant new source in the history of early modern medicine and witchcraft belief. Sir Paul Rycaut (1629-1700) was a diplomat, poet, translator and administrator. His Present State of the Ottoman Empire was the most important and influential work on its topic produced by an Englishman in the seventeenth century, and it served as a reference point for others writing on the same subject for nearly two hundred years. Rycaut's book was considered the most informative and accurate text on its subject, and was widely-read in Europe as well as in England. It contains extensive discussions of Ottoman government, religion, and military matters, and may also be read as a subtext suggesting a middle road between absolutism and constitutional monarchy.This critical edition of Rycaut's important work includes a full introduction, which discusses at length the historical background to the text, its reception at the time in which it was written and a discussion of its influence, as well as an extensive bibliography. This is the first modern edition of the work, and should be useful for general scholars of the period, specialists, and students alike.
The Poetry of Burchiello: Deep-fried Nouns, Hunchbacked Pumpkins, and Other Nonsense is the first complete English translation of the poetry of Domenico di Giovanni, nicknamed il Burchiello (ca. 1404-1449). A highly influential Florentine poet of the fifteenth century, and a barber by trade, Burchiello composed poetry that inspired numerous imitators and influenced writers for centuries afterwards. Ironically, however, he specialized in a nonsensical style that destabilized semantic meaning and that continues to baffle readers. In this bilingual edition of Burchiello's poetry, Fabian Alfie and Aileen A. Feng attempt to render Burchiello's non-sensical poetry into readable English while maintaining the experimental spirit of the original.
Beginning with Diodorus Siculus's first-century BCE account and extending to early modern German Meisterlieder, this book explores the plethora of narratives about the ancient Babylonian queen Semiramis. The selected texts, most from continental Europe, cover a range of genres and languages. Organized thematically around issues of visual communication -- acts of seeing and being seen -- this study highlights the narrative fluidity in the matière de Sémiramide, ultimately revealing a figure of excess and surplus that defies classification and categorization. In its thematic focus, this study also draws on the competitive yet complementary relationship between the visual and the verbal.
In Giovan Francesco Straparola's The Pleasant Nights, a group of men and women gather together in a villa on the Venetian island of Murano during Carnival to sing songs, tell tales, and solve riddles. A sixteenth-century bestseller, The Pleasant Nights is today a fundamental text for European folk and fairy tale studies, for alongside triumphal and tragic love stories, comical tales of practical jokes, and accounts of witty retorts, Straparola (1480? - 1557?) placed some of the first fairy tales printed in Europe. Straparola's eloquent female narrators and the fairy tales they recount became a model for a generation of French women writers in Parisian salons, who used the fairy tale to interrogate the gender norms of their day. This book presents the first new and complete English translation of Straparola's tales and riddles to be published since the nineteenth century.
