The modern idea of pastoral care is care of people who are in crisis. In this insightful book, author David Pettett argues that rather than being confined to helping people in crisis, pastoral care is actually at the core of Christian ministry. Every aspect of what the pastor does is pastoral care. Pastoral care is first and foremost a spiritual discipline and remains firmly in the realm of theology, not psychology. As pastoral care is an exercise of practical theology, Christian pastoral care is the responsibility, first and foremost, of the pastor who has responsibility for the cure of souls. This responsibility is exercised primarily in a theological framework. In Pastoral Care: The Core of Christian Ministry, the main aim is to encourage pastor/teachers to see their entire ministry in terms of pastoral care. Equipping the saints for the work of ministry for building the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12) is the work of pastoral care, which the pastor/teacher does by teaching the Scriptures. The book seeks to encourage a reversal of this alarming modern trend, which sees pastoral care as only something done for people in crisis. The book also seeks to reverse the trend of outsourcing pastoral care to counsellors and psychologists. It seeks to broaden the focus so that pastoral care is seen to be the whole essence of pastoral ministry. Pastoral care has a whole-of-life focus. From his long experience of Christian ministry, David illustrates practical pastoral care with real life situations. This is a book for pastors to consider the essential nature of Christian ministry and for lay people to think through just what their pastors are up to.
Reading the Bible has been one of the passions of my life for almost 50 years and in this short book I want to share my experience and with it underline the importance of reading the Bible.John 8:31 gives us a clue as to why this is so important. It reads - "Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him, if you CONTINUE in my word, THEN you are my disciples indeed."This teaches us that the only way to be a true and genuine disciple of Jesus is if we CONTINUE in his word.
Gangland to Grace is the gripping true story of one man's struggle through a life of gangs and violence in Christchurch, New Zealand before his meeting with God and subsequent mission service to Sierra Leone, West Africa. The depiction of the world he grew up in will have you wondering, at what point is this guy going to be either maimed or killed? As the dust is settling after God's amazing work on his life, the adventures just keep rolling along, but on a new continent and within God's will - rather than his own. This book follows the transformation of a bikie criminal to a loving, mission-minded, family man with a heart for God and His Kingdom. Prayers of the Created is a collection of poems inspired through the author's observation of God's natural world.Reminiscent of the great Impressionist artists, who used paint to capture the essence of the object rather than the subject's specific details, these poems depict not only a scene or character but the thoughts and emotions felt by the writer when observing God's world.By evoking ideas, thoughts and impressions through these poems, the author encourages you to further explore God's hand in creation and his purpose for the world, in his written word the Bible.
Nothing is worse than a teenager who has to deal with no sense of meaning and purpose in life and the doubts associated with being born into a religious family. I had to attend Sunday services, and whether I felt like it or not, join in the worship and praise, hear the long often boring sermons, and pay my way out for the attendance by means of the offerings collected. Church meant nothing more to me than an activity that stole my time from my favourite television show, which happened to be on at the same time as the services. I could not identify with the church, because I felt it was not relevant to the issues I was dealing with then. Of course there is the promise of heaven, and that was good to know, but I was naively confident I would live long enough to make the necessary changes in my life required to make it to heaven before I died. The promise of heaven was not enough for me to take church seriously as a teenager. I was on the search for relevance, and Christianity was too future-orientated for me to identify with.My quest for germaneness led me to the Spirit-inspired teachings of the late Dr. Myles Monroe. In my mid twenties I had a dramatic personal encounter with God. Little did I know that it would mark the end of a meaningless life of confusion and open a new chapter of life dedicated to seeking and serving God in truth.I came to the realization that God wanted to use me to address the very questions I had asked myself several times as a teenager. "What is the role of the church in our societies and the world at larger?"In this book I will be discussing truths that are concealed or often ignored. Truths that the world may not be able to accept and yet the very truths that will set humanity free from all our struggles.www.thekingdomgovernment.comYoutube: Kingdom Government

When thirty seven year-old Australian dentist, Graham Toulmin, told his bank manager in 1985 he was selling his practice and moving, with his wife Wendy and four young children, to a remote location in Central Africa to try to set up a pioneering dental service within the Anglican Church, the response was, 'Toulmin, you've got rocks in your head'!Long Road to Zaïre, told with compassion, insight and more than a dash of humour, is the inspiring story of the Toulmin's journey that led to this family of six leaving Australia and arriving in the bustling African town of Butembo in the mountainous region of eastern Zaïre.Looking back over half a lifetime, Graham addresses the question that their bank manager raised, a question that some of their children, now adults with children of their own, have also jokingly raised: 'Mum and Dad, what were you thinking'?This is the story of 'why' and 'how' Graham and Wendy embarked on their long road to Zaïre, beginning for Graham when, growing up as a boy in the town of Wollongong, south of Sydney, he was forced to make an emergency trip to the dentist.
