"Mental illness? Who wants to read about that?" Despite one in four people experiencing mental ill health in their lifetime, it is not a popular topic for conversation. Perhaps this book will change that! Combining amusing anecdotes, insights from research and heart-rending personal reflections, this book recounts the triumphs, traumas, and tragedies of the life of Paul - adopted child, loved son and brother, schizophrenia sufferer - and of his family. Excerpts from Paul's own journals and reflections from his family, highlight the ups and downs of Paul's life. These include his struggle with having been relinquished for adoption, his difficulty accepting the diagnosis of schizophrenia, and the inconsistent and patchwork approach to support for people with mental ill health and underline the tragic waste of human possibility resulting from inadequate mental health care. An absorbing, poignant and powerful read, this chronicling of Paul's life and experiences and its impact on his family is incredibly emotive, tackling some difficult subjects with honesty, compassion, and humour. The personable writing style makes this work accessible to a wide audience and the sustained analysis and discussion relating to the need for a higher standard of care and improvements in the mental health system makes the work compelling. Ultimately, it is a heartfelt piece that raises important suggestions for society today.
A short guide to the mysteries of time, space, and the nature of existence as expressed in various media. The author records his own views on time and space mysteries with accompanying food, art, and music recommendations, all in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. It contains passages from Shakespeare, Goethe, Brooke, Nietzsche, Housman, Tennyson, T.S. Eliot, Milton, Shelley, Yeats, Sassoon, Blake, Hardy, Kipling, the Bible, and other sources. Some aspects of Einstein's theories and astrophysics are covered with minimal mathematics. The author has created seven full-page illustrations to augment the text. This book can be 'dipped into' at any page and the author hopes it will amuse and inform in an easy-to-understand way.

Imagine you could genetically engineer a microorganism that was able to produce LSD into its culture broth. If the microorganism was a brewing yeast you could make beer spiked with homemade LSD. Imagine how much mischief you could cause with that. If the microorganism was a bacterium that you had also engineered to transfer LSD-synthesis to every other bacterium in a person's body, you could make some very potent live yoghurt. Imagine what sorts of mischief you could do then. Follow Karen Spencer, an investigator with the Plasmid Control Commission on her first solo field mission as she identifies exotic microbes like these and pursues those who created them and put them to use. And all the time she is chasing them down, the greatest mischief these microorganisms have caused is being played out in the dizzying depths of the North Atlantic.

Did you ever wonder why you see the world around you the way that you do? Ever wondered why you might see everything in your world as a means to an end? Why should you bother following the dictum to 'live within your means' when you haven't even considered 'living with or within your ends'? You might ask yourself: what is implied here by ends and by means, and why does the latter always seem to come before the former? After all, how do we end anything without a means for doing so? Living With(in) Your Ends provides a crutch for you to lean on while you ponder the means and ends within your life and the world around you. It guides you on how to maintain your true identity without getting 'sucked into world of means' where superficiality prospers. Investigating human existence through a lens that values the present moment and which provides for practical consequences, Kevin M. Stevenson, PhD, provides an exploration into the deeper realms of perception and their relationships with time and identity. Living With(in) Your Ends not only provides a conceptual map to follow for leading an authentic life, it also considers some of the historical and philosophical notions that have blessed and plagued human existence. Living With(in) Your Ends will provide you with a framework for healthy reflection and increased awareness of the intersections between yourself and the world.

This book contains a magic wand which gives the parents the power to know all the right answers, all of the time. ...I wish, you wish, we all wish! Sadly, this book has no magic wand. However, it does have some very useful strategies and an understanding that perfect parenting (like magic wands, unicorns, Griffiths, and reliable computer technology) is a myth. The best we can all stride for is 'good enough' most of the time. Humour is a form of play used by children and adults alike and 'playing' is one of the most effective forms of healing. Planet Parent uses humour to help caregivers, parents and grandparents better understand their child and adolescent. This then creates the space to enjoy the beautiful moments of parenthood and to endure the not-so-beautiful moments. The strategies outlined in this book are drawn from my training and experience as a child and adolescent psychotherapist of over 30 years, and in my hilarious adventures with my own children. It explores the outstanding and distressing facts about babies (I never dreamed you would have to teach babies to sleep!) children and adolescents, which I discovered in my journey as a mother. The universal tribulations and pleasures that envelope all parents are discussed to emphasise the truth that parents are not alone (there are many, many of us parents) This book encourages the understanding that parents have great power to nurture our child's resilience... and that there can be hilarity and fun in the process!

This is not where I saw myself in five years. It's not where I said I'd be during the job interview either. Now I'm stuck in a low-level, dead-end job I have no interest in. At least I'm good at what I do - that's something, I guess. So, when I uncover suspicious activity on a new account that threatens to launder hundreds of millions through the company I work for, I report it to my superiors, going through all the official channels exactly like you are supposed to. But what do you do when they refuse to take suspicions seriously? How far do you go when you only suspect a crime is happening? What desperate measures do you resort to in order to bring these crimes to light, especially when there's the possibility of losing everything?
Each of us are on the journey of mortality. A journey in which no one is spared a handful of heartaches, a time of trial, or a darkest hour. And though our time on Earth is a time for joy, love, and life- there will come a time, or many, of shadow when a simple word of hope is all that seems to part the darkness surrounding us. A time when it is only hope that is light enough to keep us moving on our path. Where this hope can be found is a question whose answer is too individually unique to capture in a simple phrase. A Word of Hope is a collection of poetry that explores some sources of hope and the faith required to find them. Other poems in the collection paint a picture of the hardships of mortality as these are the times hope is most needed. These poems serve as reminders that no matter what may darken our lives, there is some light that will always shine. There is always hope to be had.
