How does a farm boy brought up on an isolated farm with no electricity, or running water supply, leaving school at fifteen with no academic qualifications, have a successful career in the police force and become an overseas police adviser? John describes his motivation to serve and protect, and takes you through his police career, including when he climbed the headstock of a disused colliery to talk down a disturbed teenager, had a convicted killer hold a knife to his throat, and took a loaded shotgun out of the hands of an aggressive teenager. He enumerates his progression through the ranks and describes an occasion when he refused to obey an order from his Chief Constable, which probably cost him a promotion. Post-retirement, he worked for a private security company involved in the escorting of prisoners to courts and prisons and describes having to spend three days in the witness box at an inquest into the death of a prisoner in transit to prison. As an overseas police adviser sitting in a restaurant in Addis Ababa with his wife, a colleague and his wife, John saw a hand grenade come to a standstill just inches away from his legs and he expected to die, but miraculously survived. Flown back to the UK for treatment he had his moments of fame, appearing on TV news and on the Big Breakfast show on Channel 4. Attending a presentation function at the Café Royal, he sat next to Lois Maxwell, the original Miss Moneypenny and the lady on whom her character was based.

Her plan to toe the line, keep to herself, and just see the term through takes a twist when she mysteriously bonds with her mentor and fellow student, the somewhat clumsy yet handsome Ethan Chase. Press your chin hard against your throat. Now turn your head to the left and lift your left shoulder until it touches your ear. Keep your chin against your throat, your left ear against your left shoulder, contract your neck and shoulder muscles as tightly as you can and hold it like that for the rest of your life. That's right. Eat like that, brush your teeth like that, drive like that and keep your head like that when you go to sleep at night. This is what psychiatrists in South Africa did to me and they expect me to live like that for the rest of my life.

Humanity has long dreamed of travelling and settling among the stars. The fact is that like any other star, the Sun, will one day succumb to gravity and run out of its primary fuel, hydrogen. When this happens, life on earth will become impossible, as the sun envelops our planet. Understandably then, many have considered the possibility of colonising planets beyond our solar system in order to ensure the survival of 'Earthians' (my moniker for humans born on planet Earth) beyond the fixed lifetime of our sun. Zoom or Doom imagines such a journey but on a far grander scale - expanding beyond our galaxy. Marx Afaro Zytan, an oddball who appears nervous while relaxed but serene when nervous, is a ruthless man and an inhabitant of planet Zist. The book follows his story, which revolves around the revolutionary scientific discovery of a special type of fuel system that can transform matter into energy. This not only enables the possibility of light-speed travel for space-ships, but intergalactic travel and even time travel.

Walter's freshman year at a top Engineering School wasn't what he had hoped for. Academic success was a given but wasn't college supposed to be about freedom, drugs and wild sex? This was 1969 after all. But as Walter laments "freshman year was just OK, I somehow missed out on that sex thing."Walter was hoping sophomore year will be his MVP season. Regrettably it wasn't, it was a nothing, in fact it was The Year that Didn't Exist. The story opens with Walter's big mistake: securing off-campus housing with two roommates he finds intolerable. One chapter details his accidental meeting, and getting stoned with Jane and Tom H. They, activist-celebrities, on their way to a Vietnam protest rally at the Tute, Tom being the keynote speaker.Several chapters are devoted to his introduction and obsession with recreational drugs, pot, hashish, LSD and Ludes. How he meets his first girlfriend, the result of a bet, as to who would score better on a biology test, is thoroughly, but not graphically detailed. And finally, the only real highlight of his meaningless year, teaming up with drug buddy Strappa and winning a collegiate bowling championship, provides a humorous ending to the saga. The Year that Didn't Exist should strike chords that ring true in almost everyone and hopefully transport the reader back to their college days, days perhaps simpler and likely filled with unbound optimism.
