Portrait of a Unique Music Hall ArtisteOrphaned at thirteen, Malcolm Scott rose to become a leading female impersonator of the Edwardian era. A true eccentric, he first made his name at the Palace and Pavilion theatres in London attired as a female figure of history where he entertained audiences with his highly individual satiric act as "The Woman Who Knows." An acerbic wit, with a surrealist humour, he was in many ways a man ahead of his time. Besides being an actor, he was the doyen of Pierrot shows, and widely acknowledged as one of the finest pantomime dames ever known. In addition, he made several successful world tours and became an early radio personality before his untimely death. With a discography and substantial inventory of credits including all known sheet music and many rare photographs, this extensively-researched monograph is the first ever written about a forgotten great of British entertainment.

Nobody dealt with fame, career and family like these two."They were great friends of mine for years, and I worked with both of them on many projects, writing the screenplays that were to be their final starring roles. Marlon's film got made - because he was Marlon. Greg's film was another story entirely, just as Greg was."MARLON & GREG is the true story of two legends in their final years, told by someone who was there, in the families and the film industry. He was in the middle of a pair of grand lions who lived and made their exits on their own terms.
Funny stuff from a couple of the guys from the Firesign Theatre.
Peter BergmanAs a founding member of the legendary comedy group, The Firesign Theatre and as the creator and host of Radio Free Oz (both the radio and online incarnations,) Peter Bergman had been one of our culture's most insightful (and funny) pundits and political observers.Sadly, Bergman passed away as this collection was being readied for production. It was intended to be the first in a collection of essays, skits and comedic vignettes culled from his RadioFreeOz.com podcasts. Although the show could no longer continue, Bergman's commentaries in regard to the 2010 mid-terms and their immediate aftermath have proven to be not only cogent assesments of that era's political climate but now serve as a ghostly signpost to where we have found ourselves heading today.Ah, Peter Bergman, ever The Wizard.David OssmanPoet, writer, director, actor and cofounder of The Firesign Theatre and occasional RFOz co-host, David Ossman, adds his warm and soulful verse as well as his hilarious characterizations and social commentary to this collection. Mr. Ossman currently resides with his lovely wife, Judith, on Whidbey Island in the Great Pacific Northwest.Phil FountainBetter known as the House Illustrator and Cartoonist for Radio Free Oz, Philip (a/k/a Hal O'Dali,) was responsible for the finest graphic elements found on any web-based audio program in the known universe. He also did the drawings found in "Trolling The Woe." He is currently holed-up in the shadow of Mount Shasta in Northern California with his wife, Christine, assorted grandchildren and their dogs.

Muriel, or The Time of Return was director Alain Resnais' first color feature, and its film stock immediately set it apart from many other French movies of the early 1960s. Appearing hot on the heels of Resnais' arthouse smashes Hiroshima mon amour and Last Year at Marienbad, Muriel failed to attract the same attention as its predecessors, and the film's initial domestic release yielded indifferent box office results. This lukewarm response could perhaps be attributed to Muriel's probing of the still fresh wounds inflicted by the Algerian War, as the French public of the time held little appetite for further discussion of what was widely viewed as a messy, dispiriting conflict. Yet time has allowed Muriel to slowly emerge as Alain Resnais' masterpiece, and its exquisite distillation of its director's preoccupations marks it out as the quintessential Resnais film. Looking for Muriel examines both the film and its setting of Boulogne-sur-Mer, and also delves into numerous related areas, including the Algerian War, the French New Wave cinema movement, the Second World War, and the wider careers of both Alain Resnais and Muriel's incomparable star, Delphine Seyrig. Muriel's intricate editing and complex script are also discussed, as are other films which touch on similar themes. Darren Arnold is a film critic and author of Devil's Advocates: The Devils and The Pocket Essential Spike Lee. He lives near London with his family.
The great story of EDGAR KENNEDY who appeared in over 400 Hollywood films spanning four decades.
Fibber McGee and Molly was one of broadcasting's greatest triumphs, reaching its height during the 1940s when millions of Americans tuned in Tuesday evenings to hear radio's royal couple welcome the Old Timer, Gildersleeve, Mrs. Uppington, Mayor LaTrivia, Doctor Gamble, and other visitors who came calling at the most famous address in Comedyland, 79 Wistful Vista. A listening favorite in many homes from the Depression right into the Space Age, Fibber McGee and Molly was unique in that it aired in three different formats: thirty-minute productions, fifteen-minute episodes, and vignettes heard on NBC Monitor. This guide to over 1300 episodes covers all three formats of the series with entries listing date of broadcast, title, cast, summary, musical numbers, running gags, and comments designed to enhance the enjoyment of listeners and readers. Features of the second revised and enlarged edition include additional entries from the early years of the program and five appendices (one tabulating all openings of that famous hall closet). Clair Schulz, a dedicated listener to vintage radio recordings since 1974, served as Archives Director at the Museum of Broadcast Communications and contributed to the MBC's Encyclopedia of Radio. He is also the author of an episode guide to The Great Gildersleeve. On the Screen, On the Air, On My Mind, a collection of his writings about motion pictures and radio programs, has been published by BearManor Media.
"Some of the sharpest writing ever from a comic genius." -Kurt Luchs, Talking Book Review "Good sentence structure." -Chevy Chase Philip Austin, one of America's great comedy writer/performers and one quarter of the notorious Firesign Theatre, was the editor and main contributor of an alternative-universe 1930s-era New Yorker that never was. Influenced in equal parts by the noir of Hammett, the deeply personal short stories of Saroyan, and the barn-burning surrealism of the MarxBrothers, he wrote stories of The Old Detective, a shamus who hung out in a tatty pink-plaster bungalow telling tales of exotic babes shooting craps in a barrel; wood-peckers who solved mysteries; mountaineers who worked laterally across miles of urban city streets; and housewives of Fresno who abandoned their homes and dug tunnels below their neighborhood. The 18 stories in this collection cover all this territory and more, delving into Phil's love of dogs, the Pacific Northwest, state fairs, and school lunch menus. A must-have for anyone who's enjoyed his work in or out of the Firesign Theatre. PHILIP AUSTIN was born in Denver, Colorado in 1941 and grew up in Fresno, California. He attended Bowdoin College, Fresno State College, and UCLA. In the 1960s he was a member of the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles and was Program Director for Drama and Literature at KPFK-FM, where in 1966 he met his future collaborators in the Firesign Theatre-Peter Bergman, David Ossman, and Philip Proctor. The Firesign Theatre went on to write and perform more than 23 albums over 40 years, several of which featuring Austin's best-known character, Nick Danger. The group's album Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers was inducted into the Library of Congress' Recording Registry in 2005. As a writer he published many short stories and wrote several screenplays, including the never-produced Grateful Dead movie Brokedown Palace and the novel Beaver Teeth. He died in 2015.

"A keen wind had come up that wailed through the streets. With Caine was Peter, the Ancient, Master Khan, Steadman and Rykker. The 'Magnificent Seven' looked around the streets where they would be fighting. None of them spoke. The ambiance weighed heavily on them. Peter looked up at the rooftops that surrounded the streets. Steadman and Rykker also took note of the rooftops. More of the ruined buildings crowded in around them. It was a setting that did not sit well with our heroes."
