In 1938, Penny Singleton achieved worldwide fame for her movie portrayal of Blondie, the beloved comic-strip character created by Chic Young. Penny Singleton: A Biography traces the life and times of the gifted entertainer who brought Blondie to cinematic life. Born Dorothy McNulty in 1908, she worked for years in vaudeville, eventually progressing to Broadway for such musical extravaganzas as The Great Temptations, Good News, and Follow Thru. Hollywood beckoned, and the sprightly newcomer was soon before the cameras alongside William Powell, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, and other iconic stars of the 1930s. But it was the role of Blondie, in 28 popular movies and a concurrent radio adaptation, that endeared the actress to audiences. In 1952, with her film and radio commitments completed, Penny launched a highly successful nightclub act. She later ventured into regional theatre and then television, providing the voice of Jane Jetson in the futuristic animated series The Jetsons. Beneath the laughter and applause, however, was a woman determined to make use of her most fervent desire - to improve working conditions for her fellow variety performers. In 1958, Penny made headlines as the first female president of an AFL-CIO union. Thus began a 20-year journey that would be marked by legal challenges, financial setbacks, and even anonymous death threats. Drawing upon archival materials, and exclusive interviews with family members, close friends, former costars, and the actress herself, Steve Randisi presents a revealing portrait of a trailblazing show-business personality.

A man believed to be dead for many years has, in actual fact, all the while been carefully planning his meticulous revenge mission whilst in hiding, living under an assumed identity, and he is now, finally, about to come out of hiding to exert devastating vengeance on his enemies. Not alone is he acting on his own behalf, but he equally seeks to avenge the deaths of his fallen comrades-in-arms. This man is the eponymous Avenger of the Dead - Mathias Sandorf. This is a first-time translation into English of Michel Verne's novelization of his 1921 film version of his father Jules Verne's classic 1883 adventure story Mathias Sandorf. In addition to the rendering itself, by Verne scholar and translator/translation theorist Kieran O'Driscoll, this volume contains a wealth of fascinating research about the film itself, its actors and its director, with copious illustrations including press cuttings, film posters and film stills, by Verne and Film Studies expert Philippe Burgaud. This volume is dedicated to the memory of the late Dr Brian Taves, Verne and Film Studies scholar who sadly passed away during the preparation of this volume in which he had been a key collaborator.

Eddie Fowlie's career in films spanned more than 50 incredible years as property master, special effects expert and all-round troubleshooter. From modest beginnings, he burst into the movie industry during Hollywood's Golden Era, working with some of the world's leading film directors and biggest stars. But it was his unique relationship with David Lean that set him apart. Fowlie was one of a select few - a 'dedicated maniac' who understood the legendary director better than most. The two were a perfect foil for each other and became close friends, making five classic epics along the way. Among his many cinematic achievements, Fowlie helped blow up the bridge on the River Kwai, cover the Spanish countryside in fake snow for Doctor Zhivago and create the famous quicksand scene in Lawrence of Arabia. Outspoken and outrageously irreverent, Fowlie recounts his amazing life in this candid and wildly entertaining autobiography.

As pointed out in Jeff Tonda's book Famous Little People, the size and importance of one's achievements is not necessarily relevant to the physical size of the individual. Famous Little People presents an informative, engaging and affectionate look at those who might be small in stature but large in talent. Tonda's book offers not just incisive entertainment biographies but references the accomplishments those of diminutive height have made throughout history, from Biblical times onward. While Little People were featured in roles during the silent era and into early Hollywood talkies, perhaps the first film to highlight and bring audience awareness to these unique individuals was the 1939 MGM classic The Wizard of Oz, wherein dozens were cast as the citizens of Munchkinville. Tonda also examines how Little People were exploited in cinema, such as in the Jed Buell musical western The Terror of Tiny Town. Little People have been featured in hundreds of motion pictures and television programs throughout the decades, these roles providing welcome employment, but often frustration and disappointment because of restrictive typecasting. The stories presented in Tonda's book feature both triumph and tragedy, focusing on the personal and professional highs and lows experienced by Little People working in show business. From early screen performers like Billy Curtis, Jerry Maren and Billy Barty to Gary Coleman, Herve Villechaize and Warwick Davis, the book is an honest and sensitive account of how they navigated their lives and careers, sometimes to success, other times to a sad finale. Some of the stories are humorous, others poignant. Famous Little People recognizes and indeed celebrates the courage of those who did not surrender to their physical limitations and went on to form professional careers. Just as importantly, Tonda's book serves as an inspiration - to people of all sizes that even against difficult odds, the rainbow is not always beyond reach.

At the height of World War II, Americans on the home front were making do with less in all corners of their lives, from food to cloths to cars. A recent arrival in our fair land, Kharis the Mummy of Mapleton, Massachusetts, née Prince Kharis of Egypt, also made a sacrifice: his royal lineage! During WWII, one of the responsibilities of the Office of War Information (OWI) was to ensure that nothing in Hollywood movies offended our allies or neutral countries. In 1943, when Universal proposed a third Kharis movie, The Mummy's Ghost, its pilot again had Kharis and a mad holy man committing murder in the service of Egypt's demon gods. Alarm bells sounded in Washington and the OWI's concerns were relayed to Universal. The script rewriting began, with government men and even a Washington expert on Middle Eastern affairs getting in on the act. The Mummy's Ghost tells us that the Kharis of ancient Egypt was a commoner rather than a prince, but this change did not affect the Mummy's homicidal streak, wider than ever as he seeks to bring the mummy of Princess Ananka home to Egypt. When Ananka's soul finds a new home in an Egyptian girl, Amina Mansouri, Kharis abducts the young beauty and carries her to a nearby swamp, where both have a date with destiny.
