In 1929, Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027 for herself and her youthful partner Jean Badovici, but only lived there for three years. Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Mar- tin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the "Maison en Bord de Mer". Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well. Urban riverbanks are attractive locations and highly prized recreational environments. However, they must meet the requirements of flood control, open space design and ecology at the same time, often a challenging task for the designer in very confined spaces. The book, the result of a study lasting several years, subjects more than 60 exemplary projects to a comparative analysis. Paper and cardboard as sustainable building materials are currently the subject of research and testing. Sustainability is to become the guiding principle of social action and economic activity. At the same time, its ways and means are far from clear. As a holistic praxis, sustainability must combine technical and material as well as social, economic, ecological and also ethical strategies, which have multiple complex interactions and all too often also conflicting goals and priorities. Mit Josef Frank (1885-1967) widmet sich der erfolgreiche Katalog zur Ausstellung im MAK in Wien 2015/16 einem der bedeutendsten österreichischen Architekten des 20. Jhdt. Neben dem wegweisenden architektonischen Werk geht es insbesondere um einen Gestalter, dem das internationale Design bis heute wichtige Impulse verdankt: Als auch gegenwärtig noch "zeitgenössischer" Architekt und "Designer" vertrat Frank einen pragmatischen Gestaltungsansatz, bei dem weniger formale Qualitäten als vielmehr solche des sozialen Erlebens im Vordergrund standen. Gerade heute scheinen Franks Vorstellungen einer ungekünstelten und unprätentiösen Zweckdienlichkeit, die auf eine eigenständig freie, aufgeklärt bürgerliche Wohn- und Lebenskultur jenseits stilistischer Dogmen und modischer Konventionen abzielte, aktueller denn je.
In many countries of Southeast Asia, the middle years of the 20th century marked the dawn of a new era. Independence had been won from colonial powers, and young states such as Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia, Cambodia and Singapore were faced with the task of reconstituting themselves as nations and developing an independent postcolonial identity. Architecture and urban planning played an important role in this process. Local manifestations of modernism emerged that sought to reconcile universal aspirations with specific social conditions. This volume critically examines this architectural and ideological heritage and argues for the preservation and redevelopment of these particular architectures, which are at risk of disappearing amid the rapid urbanization of today.
