Preparing Culturally Informed Educators: Examining Complexities in Practice aims to prepare mainstream educators to work effectively with diverse learners. Though not an exhaustive review of what is required for mastery of culturally informed instruction, this approach does equip educators with content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and professional dispositions necessary to provide diverse learners with equitable educational opportunities. Chapters explore theoretical foundations and challenges of culturally informed pedagogy, culturally informed reading education for English learners (EL) and all learners, and implications of recent neurological research.

This unique and rich collection of narratives, written or dictated by formerly enslaved Africans between 1820 and 1876, offers a rare snapshot of African voices in the history of slavery. Including narratives from the Atlantic and Indian Ocean trades, as well as testimonies from enslaved people who never left the African continent, it expands the chronological and geographical scope of known accounts of enslavement, highlights the few but important women's narratives and provides thoughtful analysis and context about internal enslavement, the slave trade and the process of liberation.Made up of 32 narratives, each carefully contextualised and introduced, this volume comprises some of the most substantial and previously unpublished accounts of the slave trade in the archives of the Church Missionary and Methodist Missionary Societies. Bringing new testimonies to light and enriching our understanding of enslaved voices, African Narratives of Slavery and Abolition is an important and much-needed contribution to the 'biographical turn' and study of the slave trade.

Reconsidering the significance of the question of God in contemporary French philosophy, the essays in this volume open new pathways for thinking foreclosed by the metaphysical frameworks of our age.How better to unfurl our long-restricted powers of reason than to engage with the possibility of the limitless and infinite? What better way to measure our progress beyond metaphysical captivity than to discuss the question of God? With twelve contributions from leading experts in French philosophy of religion, the essays in this volume use the question of God to deconstruct the metaphysical patterns still carved into our thought, and reconstruct new paths that might be open to philosophy after we abandon them. Discussing the work of Augustine, Heidegger, Husserl, Nietzsche, Leibniz, and others, the contributions range across topics including the influence of neo-platonic philosophy on theology, phenomenology's interest in Christianity, truth in the era of fake news and conspiracy theories, and Buddhist wisdom.Asserting that French phenomenology's engagement with the question of God marks a deep awareness of its place in the history of thought, the work collected here answers Dominique Janicaud's critique of the "Theological Turn" which argued that theological orientations exceeded the remit and methodological competence of phenomenology. Making available in English the work of major philosophers and historians, and building connections with the critical perspectives of lesser-known thinkers, the volume promises to deepen the Anglophone reception and understanding of contemporary French philosophy.

Art is a constant point of reference for the exploration of the different manifestations of empathy and of its cognitive, affective and moral dimensions. Bringing together 15 essays from a team of established and rising philosophers, this volume sheds light on how both representational and non-representational forms of art allow empathic engagement. It examines the significance of such engagement for cognition, our emotive life and our moral stance. Opening with a historical reconstruction of the origins of empathy, or 'Einfühlung', in the German-speaking world from the late 19th to the early 20th century, the collection highlights the relevance of those early insights for current debates. Structured into four parts, chapters explore our emphatic engagement with fictional characters, with the inanimate in art forms such as film, music and architecture, with the cognitive value of empathy with fiction, and finally our emphatic response to fiction in relation to our moral attitudes. The contributors reflect on these specific themes and bring into sharp focus our emphatic engagement with works of art from historical, systematic and interdisciplinary perspectives.
